Have been doing more organised shoots with a group and models/re-enactors. The lenses I have are all for the crop D300, but am using a D800 now, and looking for a good 2.8 in the 20-55mm range

Any recommendations? Thanks

The Nikon 24-70 2.8 really is the safe/default choice. It comes at a price (especially the newer VR version) but is reassuringly well built and delivers on IQ in just about any scenario. A good used one is about £800 but it'll hold it's value pretty well if you look after it.

Some interesting alternatives.

Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC (IQ sounds great but with that irritating caveat of "if you get a good one")
Sigma 20-35 f/2 (lovely looking thing but quite a tight range)
Nikon 28-70 2.8 (Had one or two of these, every bit as good as the 24-70 but missing 4mm at wide end)
Nikon 35-70 2.8 (slower to focus and not that wide but great IQ)
Tamron 28-75 2.8 (I know little about these but they seem to be recommended a lot as budget option)

Well for covering that range I use a venerable 17-35mm f/2.8AF-S which is an excellent lens if you can find one, and a 50mm f/1.4AFD which is especially useful in low light (as well as being quick to AF if you need it).

I use the 24-70 2.8 on my D800. Fab lens.

It's worth pointing out that the D800 has a very high quality, very hi-res sensor and will show up cheap lenses. If you have a top camera, you should really pair it with top lenses or you're reducing its potential.

Thanks all, looking like the Nikon is the best bet.

Good point, and if maintained a good piece of glass will still be good in 15,20 years

Absolutely, and will fetch a good s/h price when you no longer want it.

I use the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 an awful lot superb lens and perfect for the job you described. The lates version has VR which is nice to have but heavier and apparently has more distortion than the previous model which is one I have and the lens I use the most.

Another vote for the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, non-VR version, it is the go-to lens on my D610 absolutely bomb-proof and so sharp. I had it focus matched to the body by Nikon to ensure it was me not the lens when ther was an OOF issue!
