How to edit MTS files?

I bought a wee camcorder last week with the intention of shooting a couple of promo type videos for Youtube.

Got the footage yesterday, transferred the files to PC and opened Windows Movie Maker. But only the audio plays, and apparently it doesn't handle .mts files properly.

So is there a movie maker which does? Or a converter I can use?

I've tried three converters so far and they all either want money or leave a watermark, neither of which are ideal.

It's a wee cheapy Sony Handycam, surely it should be as easy as pie for amateur use?

Didn't it come with any software?

Just a thought, don't have a Sony Camcorder but do have several Sony cameras, is it possible to change the file type being recorded? For example, on my Sony cameras I can chose AVCHD or MP4.

It did, I'm downloading it now. Usually with these things I avoid the onboard software.

It records in two formats at the same time I think. I should probably have read the instructions, but I figured it would be more straightforward.

Have you downloaded the trial of Movavi Video Converter?

It claims to handle MTS files and if you like it, it's only £24.95

I gave up on the Sony software. I've managed to convert the files to wmv, got them into Windows Movie Maker and started to edit them down but now they stop playing a minute or two in.

In the timeline I have a few edits I've made, then the main clip but when I play it there's no audio and no picture.

I've spent hours on this today and got not very far at all. If I could give this job to anyone else I would. Sadly I can't.
