V8S Petrol tank, where from ????
Discussion
Mike, the reason I ask is that I may also need to get one and I found a company who make Stn/St tanks of similar size for around £150-£200 which is the most reasonable I have seen but they would need your old tank as a pattern.
If both of us went to them we may only need to send one tank between us if they are the same and may also get a good price for two, just a thought?
Drop me an e-mail if it's of any interest and I will find you their details.

Kevin,
Each S series tank is different as steve Reid will tell you. I went down this route myself (S2), and found a local metal shop who said 200 over the phone. When I took the pattern tank to them the price went up to near 400! due to the sender unit housing.
I finally bought my S/S tank from steve with a modified sender housing to overcome the constant leaking. The sender is now bolted in place and will accept later units in stead of the std locking collar.
Hope this helps,
Christian.

Hi Christian,
The only reason that I need a new tank is that my sender also leaks and I and the garage have tried several times to resolve the problem but it still leaks. The tank is in fine condition.
I have a new sender coming from David Geralds with 2 rubber gaskets to try a last attempt at stopping this leak but if it doesn't work
it means a new tank which I will cut a hole in myself to mount a new sender in which will be accessed from the top from inside the boot (means cutting a hole in boot floor above tank and making a cover). It seems logical to me to have the sender above the usual level of the petrol to reduce the possibility of it leaking in the first place.
The supplier I saw had some example tanks and prices and I believe these were for one off fabrications and were a similar size to the S and very cheap at £120 +VAT. When I asked them they said that it would in the worst case cost around the £200 mark. The other tanks I saw had filler necks and flanges, inlet and outlets and holes for senders, so I'm taking their word on the suggested price but I appreciate what you're saying!

Mike,
Steve was very good, the tank was an exact copy in size of my original and fitted great. The fit is very tight so the tank needs to be a good copy. I did have a problem some of the studs, but Steve was excellent in sorting them out and getting it back to me. The swirl pot on the bottom is also modified as per the sender which is much better. I too did not want to spend that much money but am glad I did as Steve's service saved alot of hassle.
Kevin,
where abouts in Kent are you, my parents live in New Romney with a Griff 500 sprint car. I am sometimes down that way.
Good luck to you both,
Christian.

Mike,
From posts in this thread it appears that there are differences (thank you to all for your views and info) but I don't think that these differences are too major.
The tanks these guys looked pretty good to me and I saw them at a kitcar show (great source for parts) and as most kit builders requirements are different I doubt that they build many "standard" tanks, all pretty much bespoke I'd have thought.
I'll get their number tonight and e-mail you in the morning.
Cheers,
Kevin
