Ive seen videos, spoken to people, read bits and bobs etc about the V8S's 0-60 time. I've heard 4.5 seconds, up to 5.3 seconds. Not much in it, mines fast enough for me
but Im curious.
Is it true that if conditions were perfect, tyre temp was spot on, near-empty tank and only one up, and if the driver drove flawlessly etc the car could do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds?
Dom from TVR power said a standard V8S would do it in 4.5 for sure, IF everything was perfect
Im asking a few questions here...
1) If everything was perfect, could it make it in 4.5?
2) Surely if the above was true, then all performance car manufacturers would test in ideal conditions, and quote better figures when selling the cars to boost sales?
3) Same question with the full Podie and all the ideal conditions etc
Incidentally Pod, any idea what your 0-60 might be after all the improvements and work that your S has had?

AFAIK the quoted time for 0-60mph for the V8S from TVR was 4.8sec but most of the mags in the day tested the car and got different figures between 4.9 and 5.2 sec, which ever way you look at it, its fast enough! Harry's V8S is modified somewhat so would be expected to be among the fastest S's around so 4.7 secs might not be too far away from the truth! I am looking forward to getting mine onto a rolling road and having the tornado chip fitted, should see some good gains, if only in smoothness of delivery!!

This purely arbitary test depends on where TVR set the rev limiter on the engine that day.
The early 4.0 rover engined TVRs either acheive 60 in second gear or third gear depending on where the rev limiter cuts in.. accordingly if you need to grab third to get to 60 (as I did in my Chimaera) it obviously takes longer than a car with the rev limit set slightly higher and you can acheive it in second gear.
If TVR were producing "performance figures" for the car I'll wager they'd have used a car that would rev to 6500rpm instead of one that cuts out at 6100-6200.
Cheers,
Matt.

Do you have any details on what was done to the engine yet then Mike, 'cos it doesn't even sound "normal" let alone run like a normal 4.0..
Cheers

Yes its had Gas flowed heads, larger valves, Pocketed Pistons and a TVR 51 Cam, all done by TVR-Power. They said it should give around 25bhp more than a standard V8S meaning around 250bhp and rev more freely, which would explain a few things!! So with the re-worked Y piece and the mini supercharger I am having fitted tomorrow I should be looking at around 260-265bhp if I listen to the factory! Will know for sure once I get it onto a rolling road, until then its all a little sceptical, you know TVR!!!?? Once I have the Mark Adams chip fitted I should be looking at a pretty quick car!

Chickened out of the DIY plans you had?
Cant wait to hear how much grunt it gives you Mike, post tomorrow and let us know!
edited to add: why didn't you fit it yourself in the end then?

Yes it was your insistance that it wasnt standard(along with Bridgedav and MrSheen) that got me thinking and asking questions. I called TVR with the engine number, as simple as that and they had all the records. I spoke to a guy called Dom who worked on the engines in the early 90's, he was very helpful and knows his stuff.
Bob, as for me chickening out of the DIY, I never had intentions to wire it up myself, fit the pipe, yes but not the wiring, I wouldnt know where to start! It shouldnt give too much power (+8-10bhp max) and possibly will be useless until I get it remapped on the rolling road, we will see.

My V8S started out pretty good as V8Ss go, and it would do 0-60 fairly consistently in about 5.2 seconds. It is heavily modified now and will do it in about 4.5 on a good day, but it takes substantial modifiations (about 40% more power) to get down to those levels. If you manage to get a standard V8S under 5 seconds I would say either it's far better than average or the speedo is lying.

Is that one of the ickle electic fans that are being advertised all over ebay? If you find it goes well afterwards you might just want to check that the blades haven't been sucked off the fan ...
(Can you tell I'm just the teeniest bit cynical about these?)
