Just occurred to me as I was driving home last night when I was passed by a griff giving it some serious welly that I dont get anywhere near the rev limiter on my car - EVER.

On a blast under a tunnel, I may give it up to 4.5k or so but this produces the desired aural effect so why go higher?

In fact the only time it has been up to the limiter in the last year was when it was rolling roaded at austec a few months back...

Now i'm no ponce, and I hustle the thing around pretty quickly where conditions allow, but there seems plenty torque low down enough to not need to scream the engine.

I'm also of the opinion that it will last longer this way.

Do my views have any scientific backing?

Probably not a bad idea to stretch her legs (steady Podie) every now and again, it prevents carbon build up over time.

Nope...

Its like having a big hill outside your house...And you only use the bottom half to ride down on your Go-Kart...You wouldn't want to go right to the top every time but its great when you do...

Thats the Scientific theory..

Provided it's warmed up, I wind mine up to 5200rpm…

Peak power is at 5200rpm, so might as well get there sometimes...!

I don't make a habbit of touching the limiter, but I'm not scared of doing it.

How are the rev limiters set?

I seem to recall when mine was rolling roaded that it hit over 6200, wheras many seem to be set lower than 5800?

I guess I'm just worried that if mine has been dabbled with in the past to increase the rev capacity without thought to the longevity of the engine...

I rev the V8 to about 4k usually, maybe 4.5 k if I'm really trying on track .. most of the time i find 3.5-4k does the job. The fun is the brakes and corners tho

Not as bad as it sounds, it just cuts down the revs for a fraction of a second. It's just like a mis-fire. If you park your car and floor the gas pedal (with a hot engine), you'll see what it does if you hold it there for a few seconds. I have never had mine cut in whilst driving but I did have some muck in the fuel once so I pulled over and did this and noticed that the rev limiter worked. The car ran superbly after!

The sound of my V6 2.8 going from 4000 to 5000 is pure classic symphony, it will go to 6000 but this is wasting petrol after about 5500.

I don't take mine past 4500rpm - as I don't really get any extra out of the car and the hairs start to stand up on the back of my neck (not in a good way) if I take it much higher...

know what you mean,at around 6100 my 2.9 cuts out but from 5500 onwards its like a tortured cat with throat ache through a mega-phone saying 'why do you have to do it?'.

although it does stop the wheels spinnong if you're trying to be a hooligan!!
