What is the silver thingy at the front of the EFi?
Discussion
What is the silver cylindrical thingy at the front of the EFi, has a plug on the end and is about 3 to 4 inches long? .........Cue Podie for a knob gag!
It is a sensor for the EFi and is located to the driver side of teh EFI plenum near the TP, not sure what it is tho, I know the garage replaced mine when it went in for poor running. I think they said it was an air temp sensor but I thought the ECU did that?

I think you mean the Air Bypas Valve (metal cylinder on the offside of the induction plenum). It allows extra air into the system when cold (acts like a choke).

Or is that extra fuel and less air whilst cold?
Sounds like the very one, same location.
Thanks Roy.
As far as I know you should be able to order it from your nearest Ford dealer, atleast if we are talking about the 2.9 V6 engine here. I have been thinking of buying a new idle control valve since mine seems to make more noise than others. See my thread about noise from air intake.
I was quoted around £80 for it here in Sweden. Maybe you can get it cheaper somewhere else than at the official Ford dealers?

Yes it's a standard Ford part. They're not prone to failue, but usually need a good clean out as they get full of dirt from the air. If you take it off, make sure you get a good seal to the plenum (new gasket if necessary).
Yes, and a new gasket is also very cheap.
Edited to add:
Roy, have you cleaned the valve? What did you use to clean it? I guess some kind of alcohol based solvent should do the job. I haven't got round to clean mine yet because I've been spending too much time working on the swedish TVRCC website lately.

Hmmm!so praps I was missinformed by the mechanic who got one for me three months ago and laid it on thick about the trouble he had sourcing one!
Wound up with three now,two from breakers, so if Ford do run out I have the market cornered!
Cleaned inside them with Carb cleaner spray as they were bit black inside but you can't do much as nothing other than the plug end comes apart from the cylinder. It is impossible to get a brush or anything else worthwhile into the thing, except perhaps a pipe cleaner, which I did not have, so left the carb cleaner to evaporate off and about all I could find to do.

Yes.
I (as F908 Tim) used carb cleaner.
You may find that the piston sticks on the bore due to build-up of gunge.

There are two wee (very tight!) screws that hold the solenoid onto the actuator - if you split that, it makes the carb-cleaner-skooshing easier, because you can hold the valve open with your finger, you'd be amazed at the amount of extra muck that comes out.
DON'T lose the o-ring that goes between the solenoud and actuator!

Thanks guys!
I'll have a look at this as soon as possible. Just got to buy some carb cleaner first.

Johan, try some Wyyns EFI system and Carb cleaner. It disolves dirt/grease/gum on contact and made a superb job of my injectors, the car runs really nicely now.
It was my last attempt before resorting to removal and refurbishment of the injectors.
Johan...a word of warning.
I decided to clean my bypass valve last weekend as throttle seemed slow to return to a steady 800RPM and have already replaced TP the week before.
Took apart what little you can, used some petrol and a small brush to clean the cylinder and carb cleaner up into the servo. All looked much cleaner and refitted.
IT IS NOW SLOWER TO RETURN TO TICKOVER THAN BEFORE!.
Perhaps I should have left it to dry out more inside the servo before putting it back together.
If you don't have a problem leave it alone!
I hope mine will sort itself out after a few more miles, will see.Not a big problem, just idles faster than I would like at about 1000 before it dies back again to 800 about 30 seconds later.Suggest you don't spray into servo however filthy.
