Have just reached the 100k mark on my S3 (2.9V6). There is an advert in the latest Sprint (JW Dev.) for rebuilding these engines--cost apparently between 2 and 3k. Dilemma????--spares are getting like hen's teeth on the other hand engine is great and pulls like a bomb--if it ain't broke don't fix it is my motto! I would welcome advice and am curious to know what sort of mileage any of you out there might have achieved without major overhaul. The M30 engine on my Bimmer(535) is hitting 180k and has had no major problems--but that is of course BMW and is built like a battleship--is the V6 Cologne that tough????

I had a V6 Granada, same engine. I drove it from 56K miles to 185K miles with no overhaul, only normal servicing (and a water pump at one stage).

Based on other experiences, I suspect the car may have been clocked before I bought it so gawd only knows what its real mileage was...

The auto gearbox, on the other hand, cost me a fotrune but that's a different story...

I agree with the above, I took my Scorpio from 75k to 225k and it still ran like a dream, with these modern oils 200k is no problem.

I have however talked to JW on an unrelated problem and was really impressed with his knowhow and would give him a rebuild on my car if required

Mine is one of the last S series made ('93) but at around 150k it is probably also one of the highest milers. Very little of it is original though! (Major components replaced so far are rack, gear box x 3, diff x 4, engine (soon to be x2), half shafts x 3, trailing arms, numerous CV joints bushes ball joints etc.) It was very reliably though, until I started modifying it!

My S2 is 1990 and has 119K miles on it, and is original. Engine ways it runs great, I track it (or did before the V8s) and it never skipped a beat.

As said on other replies, this engine is regularly seen in Fords with VERY high miles. Some of those will have much less servicing than TVR's as well.

Hi Folks

My S2 2.9V6 is now recording 129K miles and runs better than ever. I recently had it Unichipped and its in great shape, i was advised at the time that they are bulletproof.

I suspect mine runs better than alot of low milers.

Historically it did the first 70K as a company car in 3 years and had full TVR stamps. Therefore it was well run-in

She doesnt smoke and burns no oil at all - i reckon she'll be good for 180K no problem. Worst case if she blows is i could put in a cossy version

Cheers

The oil seals on mine went at somewhere around the 90K mark - hence the engine rebuild. £3K is a good estimate of the cost to do this if you have other mods to the engine that you don't want to lose - but there are still some 2.9 EFi engines around, which are much cheaper to drop in at around £500 plus labour.

I had a new cossie lump all lined up from a local dismantlers and discovered that the S2 chassis is too narrow and has to be widened

So, I went for a recon and gas flowed heads!

Mine has just rolled over the 112,000 miles.

that is not the case you can fit a cossie in and s2 there was one at the s club meet and pictures have been posted here before ,it was a lot of work and the exhaust had to be custome built and the electrics replaced .

I asked about it here first and the advice from several was that it wouldn't fit in an S2 without altering the chassis.

Bummer, I spent £840 on the V6 rebuild and I could have put the S/H Cossie lump in for £800 inc new manifolds and the ECU.

My 1989 S2 is at 98k currently and planning on adding 250 more this weekend on the way to Cardiff.

Engine runs sweetly and has only had problems with the potentiometer in nearly 2 years and 10k of motoring.
