It seems that Tivs are not stolen that often due to them being relatively rare, difficult to sell on and sticking out like sore thumbs.

That doesn't, of course, mean that some fecker won't steal it and perhaps cause it to become acquainted with a lamp post or set it on fire because they are mere children and like to see a pretty flickering light.

I'm wondering if a tracker is worth the equipment outlay, installation and annual cover for an S.

Does anyone here have a tracker installed?

I've goot a tracker in the LCR fitted as OEM, so I did a little research before getting it and they send a newletter every few months to with useful insights.

This makes me think that if anyone wanted an S its gonna be for one of two reasons:

  • To joyride and thrash the off it

  • Special order

In the first case the car will likely be shafted or burnt out by the time its tracked, or in the latter case the thieves will be real pros and be able to check for the tracker or hide the car so that its signal cannot be found - the posher Tracker units can detect more, but the best criminals are always a step ahead.

All the UK harbours now have tracker detectors, but if a car is held in a container it can't be spotted.

BUT if it has enough of an effect on your insurance premiums go for it, they are in my experience are very professional company and work well.

The average time for a tracker equipped car to be traced after going missing is just 2 hours. All the Police helicopters and most traffic cars are fitted with tracker scanners too. Something in excess of 98% of all cars fitted with it are traced.

So its really just down to cost cos it certainly works.

Be sure of your facts Tripps - this is incorrect. TRACKER (tm) units can and have been detected within containers.

Must be just some of them then (depending on thickness/material of the container etc? or perhaps the "active" units have more powerful signals?), as I recall something where a random inspection on a loads of cars being shipped abroad was stopped when a random inspection of a conatiner and the car within triggered the tracker equipment and aroused further suspicion.

I presume this is the reason why the network is being expanded further into Europe, so they could detect the cars if they surfaced within the network.

But I don't know the details involved so can't say further...

A mate of mine got an old GPS unit and radio (cheap cheap) and hooked them up - via the internet its possible to do your own tracking following the car on a streetmap... handy to see where the other half has taken your car etc if anyone wants more details I can find out

Its good fun, not a security alternative (unless thieves fail to notice all the gear in the boot) and not too expensive either.
