I know it was a catD repair but this is very cheap for a late (1999) Chim with lowish miles, looks a good buy.

www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=28176&s=1

Sorry, it's a 1998 car on an S plate (not '99).
Also, says all it had was a bumper repair. Sounds good to me.

Looks good, but what are you doing reading the chim sales - not thinking of making a traitorous switcheroo are you (deserts S which sits in garage, gets new motor to match new house etc)

That is quite some 'small repair to bumper' if it was uneconomical to repair. The repair quote must have been more than £10K!!!

From the ad: - "HAS HAD VERY SMALL REPAIR ON BUMPER (was cat d hense price, you save £2000)BUT NOW PERFECT"

I don't want to put down anyones car especially if they are selling but I'd have to agree with you Chris that a cat D is usually a bit more than a roughed up bumper.

I'm sure it has been repaired very well tho and certainly looks nice if you enlarge the pics and to be honest for that money I certainly wouldn't be bothered if the chassis was undamaged and/or has all been repaired to a high standard.

Rob, No I'm not really looking to change the S at all but there's no harm in dreaming about an additional stable mate for him!

I think CAT D is usually cosmetic, which is pretty easy with a GRP car, where as CAT C is usually more structral, ie wishbones being bent or somthing like that. CAT B and A are obviously

Cat C = economical to repair
Cat D = uneconomical to repair.

From an insurance companies point of view that is!

I'm always amazed at how many late cars are considered write offs for trivial reasons, such as theft and lock damage only.

My S3 was a marginal Cat D after it was rear ended. The chassis was still straight but rear had gone up to the fuel tank (which ruptured in the impact) with a large hole in the boot. Estimate (which insurance engineer agreed) was ~£6K so they said it was uneconomical to repair (scrap value £1-2K). With a chimaera worth at least twice my old S3 I would have thought very serious damage must have been done to write it off (whatever the category).

Were you only offered the scrap value?

That would be very unfair as pre-accident you wouldn't have been driving .....scrap!

No, they gave me £7K for a 1990 S3 with 100K on the clock, seemed reasonable to me so I took the money and ran (although I did try to convince them it was worth £8K...).
As I understand it the insurance company adds up the repair cost, scrap value and decides if it is worth repairing so in my case it wasn't. Shame as it had been a good car for many years....

Pheew!

But nothing would surprise me where insurance companies are concerned.

Several friends in the past have had silly settlements offered on claims.

One had recently purchased his new car so it wasn't unreasonable to assume that the value he was looking for would be close to the price of a new car but he was offered half what he had paid for it a few weeks before it was totalled.

Of course he didn't accept this and got a solicitor involved and settled (still somewhat out of pocket) a few months later.

That's a relief Phil, I thought you had gone "ga-ga" on us or lapsed into a surreal world of legal jargon.

I was brave/foolish enough to tell Austec to sort mine out engineer hours chargable by block purchases of one week at a time
