I am about to go have a look at a V8s, but the HPi check has revealed the car to be registered as a 290s ? Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for in terms of VIN number and V5 identity? Might it be an old 290 that has had an engine swap ?

If all goes well, I should be buying her tomorrow, unless there are any rusty holes in the chassis of course...

If there is anyone in the cambridge area with a 'S' series bible, that I can borrow/buy to read on the train I would be very greatful.

Dropping the RV8 into a std V6 is a pretty tall order. IIRC the V8 has cross bracing on the chassis that the V6 doesn't have. It also has rear discs. On the other hand it could be an S4 which has had an engine swap. What year is the car?

My V8S, a 1991 has 290i on the V5. I was worried at first but it is a real V8S and I understand that TVR were a little slow in updating things like this.
I would say nothing to worry about.

Yes, I think it's normal as most S2 cars appear to have S280 on the V5. Mine is a later S2 yet it still has this.

Same goes for the V8S it would appear!

Alot of the V8S cars were marked up as either a 280s or 290s

It would need a fair bit of work to pass an S2, S3 etc of as a V8S

New bonnet required
discs all round
RV8 engine

And thats just the easy to check bits

I was worried at first also, all the insurers I phoned saw the V8S to be a 290 as well.

Mines registered 15/05/1992 has no CAT and has V8S as the model type.

I have a note relating to the chassis number info somewhere, posted on this group a while ago. It indicated that the first three letters indicate UK, the fourth letter D = drophead. The next two letters S(N) = model, followed by 4 (engine size), P petrol. Next letter was unexplained, followed by manufacture date A=1980, B=1981 etc, etc, mines an M which is feasible. With the last three numbers being the number of car produced - that must be across all models. Does this match with anyone else's info?

My ex-car (now GI's) was first registered 04/08/1992 and is shown as V8S on the V5.

Good news is that that's a bad guess. 1992 cars onwards have to have cats.

I have a note relating to the chassis number info. Mines an M which is

1991 and so does not need a cat. Note that the relevant date is the chassis production not registration. I think that you may find that TVR "made" a lot of chassis at the end of 1991 and not too many at the beginning of 1992.

I think the V5 does state that you should notify the DVLA if there are any errors and that is really an error isn't it. I may get mine changed from 280S to V6S.

My V5 had 290 S so I sent the form back asking to have it changed to V8S.

DVLC sent back the V5 with a note saying TVR never registered the model as V8S, so it stayed as 290!

280S to V6S.

But they are registered as 280 or 290 to differentiate between the engines. Your's is an S. You've just made up that V6S name.
