Reverse gear crunching

Whenever i select reverse gear my 1990 S2 makes a very nasty crunch. Is there some way of doing this I don't know of, or is my first very large bill on it's way to me... I've had the car less than a week!

Make sure you are putting the clutch all the way in.

Check the clutch fluid level, a couple of us have neglected to do this and then lost cluthc.

try putting the car into first before selecting reverse.

Bleed the clutch system

Check for leaks on both cylinders

Get the gearbox oil replaced.

If none of this helps you'll have to have the clutch replaced in a while. Putting it into first tends to help a lot. Double de clutch when changing to get easier changes.

Someone explained to me that this is (might be, if its the same crunch we are talking about) the syncromesh.

I dont know what it is, but my V8S has one, and by selecting 1st before reverse stops the crunch. Praps someone more enlightened can explain exactly how (Id be interested to hear)...

yep, first or third before engaging reverse.

Also the case on the Chimaera, as well as with my Rover.

So, all your cars have this fault then Phil?

do you usually laugh at your own jokes?

the Nissan doesnt do it, but the S2, Chim and Rover all have the same tendancies. Now I find myself sticking it in 1st/3rd before selecting reverse in the Nissan too!

I'm one of those

There's been a few of these posts recently and the tips given are spot on.

There 'aint much clutch fluid on a S at best (small reservoir and a short pipe run to the slave cylinder), so if any has been lost you will notice the difference and, in my experience, reverse gear is the first one to start playing up.

Driving it once in a blue moon is plenty thanks...

It really is the rough'un of the bunch. Last cleaned in April, big dent in the boot, scrapes all over it and an exhaust blowing badly enough its not far off the sound of the TVRs. But its great at what it does - a 90 mile commute each day and fairly rapid at doing it. The handling is, strangely enough, exceedingly good, probably better than the Rover which is the top of the range "sports" model
