Considered straying?
Discussion
I've had my S3 for almost 3 years. Its been a fantastic car - but I think its time for a change.
The obvious choice is a Griff, but even that seems a little too similar to the S3 - may as well just stay with what I've got. At the moment at the top of the list is a 911 (either whale tail 80's Carrera 3.2 or later 964 - either way a Targa)
I don't expect either to be particularly popular choices on this board...
But now the question - if you were to buy a replacement for your S - not from Blackpool, what would you get?

i have to say I cannot see myself straying from TVR. They are everything I have looked for in a sports car and more.
Porsche has never done anything for me and probably never will. A dancing donkey is a different matter but out of most peoples reach.
It would depend on whether the car was used everyday or as a toy. If it were a toy, a Detomaso Pantera would be a very attractive option. If everyday, then I guess I can see the virtues of a Porsche, but they just dont excite me enough.
As you say, the 500 Griff is the obvious move from the S. I would drive one before you make any decisions.
I do like concertible cars and for the Griff 500 money I can only think of fairly girlie
convertible, boxster, TT cabrio, SLK, etc.
I guess the S2000 would be a strong option to. The layout is right and plenty of poke. I have always seen them as a bit of a jap TVR in terms of power, design, layout etc. And could be used everyday. If not, maybe a Dax Cobra?

Imelda, didnt realise you had an S before the Marcos. Actually
that was another car i left off the list. They sound fairly nice too
And a Ginetta G33 has always had a place in my soft spot list.
Mark, may get flamed for saying this, but i do think people tend to be either Porsche fans or TVR fans and very rarely seem to get on with the "other" marque. So it would seem from the various forums on PH anyway. There seems to be a history of TVR's, or a history of Porsches, and anyone that "swops" at any stage seems to go back to their original choice.

That does seem to be the case... My thoughts on the matter is its as much to do with the perception of the type of people who drive them as the cars themselves. The stereotypical TVR driver is different to the Boxter driver - and these things become self-fullfilling. Older Porsches seem to be owned more by enthusiasts... and are 'rawer' than new ones. Or am I trying to kid myself?
I think I just need the money to have both

I must agree on the comments made and say that a 911 would be a good choice if you have to!
the great thing about a 911, is if you paid 15k for one it will still be worth the same in 3 years. TVRs seem to be taking a bit of a hammering down on the prices at the moment. Just look in top marques mag and see how prices of cerberas have dropped. Have people gone off them or what? I've allways fancied a Cerb!

Test driven a newish Boxster, didn't do anything for me. Certainly quicker than mine, but just not as much fun. Can't see me straying from TVRs, but though circumstances may change hopefully there will be one in the garage even if I need something else day to day.
In my limited experience, a Griff is a very different beat to an S; test drive a good one before you look seriously at other things..

If I had the garage space I'd buy it back tomorrow.
