I'm based in Cardiff and for the last few months been the proud owner of a lovely silver V8S. The car was inspected and given the thumbs up by Rob Ingelby, but he did say that the chassis would need a good clean etc.

I'm just a bit unsure about the best way to treat the chassis. Once i've scrapped off the loose paint rust should I :

a) paint it with rust killer, use hammerite primer and then paint with hammerite ?
b) clean off as mush loose stuff and just waxoyle ?
c) do as my garage recommend and cake the whole thing in tractor grease - followed by drive down a dusty lane?

I know nothing will by 100% but any tips/suggestions would be great.

My current regime is to get rid of all the crap, paint what I can get to with hammerite enamel paint then paint that with Waxoyl underseal paint. The parts I can't get to with a brush I spray Waxoyl underseal.

By painting directly onto bare metal, doesn't that risk trapping any rust and it continuing to eat its way inwards?

Had also thought about drilling holes and infecting waxoyl into the tubes.

According to the marketing blurb Hammerite paint is designed to be painted onto rusty surfaces and has rust killing properties.

I'm no expert though...... I've only had the car 8 months though so any experiences would be good to hear.

"POR 15" rust preventing paint. This stuff is what Shell specify for routine maintenance on their OIL RIGS. It reacts with the rust (best to get rid of the loose stuff) and actually cures better where its damp (ie under chasis), and is claimed to be harder than the original metal surface and the best prevention of future corrosion. IT ALSO COMES IN COLOURS. Try 'Frosts Auto Restoration Techniques'
You can paint over it with Hammerite, but I dont see any point....! TOP STUFF
