Going to be trying to get hold of an S in te next 3 weeks, or so, probably an S2. Just a few questions:

1). What sort of mpg can I expect on motorway runs and in town?

2). Cheapest insurance? Cheapest I found was Tesco £1545 (parked outside on street). But I may get the car trackered an alamrmed.

3). How waterproof are they? (Live in Newcastle)

4). Can you fit other wheels to the? If so what make?

Cheers and hopefully soon I'll be able to join in on a lot of posts.

1. 25-30 (ish) depending on how much fun you are having and how many mountains you decide to drive up
2. With Tesco myself.
3. Lots of overnight rain in Scotland over the last few weeks and the inside stayed nice and dry.
4. Why would you want to? The original ones are (a) original and (b) look great.

Hi Chris

Welcome aboard mate - you won't regret it!

1. I get 27mpg on long run, and about 21mpg in town. I've only taken a couple of readings as have not had long but they can't be far off the average.

2. Tesco £1545? Ouch! Try Classic Line - don't have no. with me but they advertise in TVR Sprint, and I can get the number tonight if required (Sprint also good for car ads - join TVRCC - £38ish for year). Mine cost £260 (1500 miles, Herts postcode, 33, full NCB). As is second car, they "mirrored" my NCB so didn't have to give it up on tin box insurance!!

3. Waterproofing is variable - seals tear/wear over time. Fabsil spray helps. Mine has leaked once in the June thunderstorms. Bought Leven car cap (£150) - expensive but suits me - see previous threads for pics. Have left out on occasions without car cap since and no leaks. I think it's down to how carefully you fit the hood, so as to align and not trap seals etc.

4. Other wheels? Oz wheels are gorgeous. I have seen Griff/Chimaera wheels on S's but IMO not as good as Oz wheels.

Good luck with the hunt (and check that chassis - most expensive bit of car to fix if bad!)

1. If I'm being careful, I reckon I used to get pretty close to 30. Now I'm more used to the car, its dropped a little. If I try really hard I reckon I could get it down to about half that..

2. Mannings may not touch you if the car is not garaged. On the same basis, best I found was Peart, though Sunninghill IIRC were good too. I think you can get a better deal than that, just have a look around. Only thing to think about over and above the ususal protected NCBetc is track day cover.

3. Mine lives outside and it watertight. Needs a bit of effort once a year to treat the hood and make sure the seals are still ok, but its been fine so far. A car cover is a good thing to get, will probably do so before next winter..

4. Probably fairly easy. Ought to be a standard Ford 4 stud wheel. Seen a few with changed wheels and they looked okish. Personally prefer the originals, but if you really want to change then let others know about it. Don't know what the original wheels are worth, but IIRC they no longer make them so are getting more rare. A good set would be worth something to someone..

1). Up to 30... but as low as 12!

2). Second car, garaged, 5k a year, A Mannings... £320

3). Varies. Mine was perfect until I had the rear window replaced. Now leaks like a sieve. - even after Renovo, Thompsons water seal, hood realignment AND new seals!

4). Vodkakid changed his - pics may still be on his profile.

glad to hear you are still planning on going ahead mate.

Insurance - as you are under 25 its unlikely you will get classic insurance. Tescos are normally on the ball so you may struggle to beat that quote. Try a few specialist brokers such as adrian flux, dorset insurance etc. I went through Privilege but now will be through A Manning or Sunningdale as for 25+ they are far cheaper as a TVRCC member.

Wheels - the originals look best IMHO. Everyone has their own view on this though. As Psychobert says, it shouldnt be too hard to get some aftermarket alloys. If you buy an S with OZ 8 spokes chances are you would pay for the replacements and have money left over by selling off the originals - they dont make them anymore and are rarer than hens teeth so will fetch good money second hand.

mpg - no idea. Whats that then? dont look at that gauge as it could be confused with the clock the speed it moves....

waterproof. Never had a problem with the roof but Thompson waterseal it fairly frequently. Occasional drips into the footwell were fixed with silicon sealant in the bulkhead area... Get a cover if needs me. I used to use a cheap one from Argos with no problems regarding scratching the paintwork. if you plan to leave it outside regularly, you may be wise to invest in teh £150 leven one.

Hi Shnozz

Yeah, I was pretty set on the Elise, but between, you, my dad and my bank, I have decided to go for an S. Hopefully will be looking at a couple when I go down to London in 3 weeks.

Insurance wise I think the main problem will be age. I'm 22 in case anybody doesn't know and haven't had any experience driving this sort of car. Counts against me a lot.

I think I'm going to have an alarm fitted and possibly a tracker. Anybody reccomend a good one?
I was thinking of Aftermarket alloys, to save the original ones, just in the Winter when there's a lot of Salt on the road.

P.s any owners in the Newcastle area? Did see a gree on around the other day.

I get between 25-30mpg normally but when its really dry I do tend to press the loud pedal a little harder and then it becomes in the low 20's but you will be surprised for a sports car how economical they are!

I go through Classic line but I dont think they insure under 25's, like the others have said try RH Specialist, Adrian Flux and mannings etc...

Mine is garaged but has been outside in some very heavy downpours and stayed completely dry, the roof is certainly something to take a close look at when buying! Smell for damp in the carpets!

You certainly wont regret buying an S, I looked at an elise but they sound like a hairdryer, didnt excite me at all!!! I had a Boxster S before the S2 and I am having a lot more fun now than in the Porsche, which I must say surprised me.

Welcome to S ownership dont forget to post pics when you buy one!

1. I reckon I average around the late 20s, but I haven't checked that carefully.

2. It depends whether you're after a limited mileage policy or everyday use as to who you're best talking to.

3. Mine's always been dry as a bone except when some of the stitching went at the bottom of the window. The Thomsons Waterseal's worth doing as well.

4. If you're just after some winter wheels you should check out Halfords. They do a full set of alloy wheels and tyres for around £300 IIRC. Probably not the best in the world, but perfectly sufficient for winter boots.

Happy hunting!
