Hey Ho! So we'd been together for over 4 weeks when the clutch decided to stop working on Wednesday

Didn't notice the condition of the master cylinder cap when I bought the car, but after I managed to get it off, b@g*er me, it was almost as dry as a bone, apart from a nasty heap of some sort of black residue - presumably the seals.

So, given this general condition, went for a new cylinder ( nice one Doug at David Gerrard's - arrived next day) and reckoned evan a geriatric like me ought to be able to cope with fitting it.

Went on OK once I'd worked out that the piston rod wasn't connected to the clutch pedal by a clevis pin and all seemed OK until tried to bleed the system.

Slackened off bleed nipple on slave cylinder, connected pipe and receptacle and pumped away, but nothing happened. Unscrewed nipple completely, but still nothing.

So, can only assume connecting pipe is blocked, which I suppose shouldn't be a surprise given the amount of crud in the original cylinder.

Questions:

Is there an easy way to clear out the pipe without access to an airline?

Could there be any other explanation for my inability to bleed the system?

Help - you did so well with the keys in the boot routine that I though I'd try again

forgive me for stating the obvious but you did fit the slave with the bleed nipple at the top? it won't bleed if it's upside down!

just a suggestion...

Just did the same thing myself last weekend,

fitted new seals to both master and slave

removed pipe and had new one made up at local car spares shop using my original ends, the pipe is 1 quarter and the cost was a princley £1.50

When bleeding the system I found using a pipe to be useless, once you have refilled the system, undo the bleed nipple slightly and fully depress clutch pedal three times very slowly to prime the system.

Refill the resovoir and get somebody else to depress the pedal another time and keep the pedal fully depressed until you have re tightened the bleed nipple.

Have covered over 1000 miles this week with now other problems, well no other cluth problems, I now have a rumbling bearing on the water pump, but thats another days story.

Good Luck !!!

Thanks, both.

Found that by disconnecting pipe at slave cylinder and pumping, then reconnecting with fluid in pipe that was then able to clear air from slave - assume must have been air lock in pipe connecting master to slave.

Good, glad you got it sorted.
