mine was doing almost the same thing and turned out to be the sender on the gear box, you could check the connections at the gearbox end as well as they could be corroded. if the v8 uses the same electronic set up as the v6 you can check the output of the sender at the ecu, the bible details this. the sender wires had lost their insulation and were shorting. dont know what it would cast for the rover version but the ford one was £100
so got one fron douglas valley for £15, which was nice
