OK - ive had probs with this in the past - now the darn thing has broken off from the steering column!

The long triangular plate that the little red catch is attached to has split in half - I've looked both in the bible and the TVR Parts catalogue and it doesnt seem to exist! - is is ford (escort/sierra)?

Mine is the same, I went to a dealer and they were going to 'Bodge' it (their words not mine!!) So I ended up buying a Gas strut and solenoid and am in the process of converting it to an electric release which will be much easier, as per the V8S!

The gas strut was £13 and the solenoid was £19 incl P&P both are original parts and both new, so its probably a better solution as the garage were going to charge me £35 to 'bodge' the old wire pull which probably wouldnt last!

If you would like to know where I got the parts from, let me know!

I would be most pleased if you could post some pics of the finished setup once its done. Been thinking about doing this for years but never got round to doing more than just thinking about it.

Does anyone know where I can get the spring for the boot latch? I was informed that this should be the sames as the bonnet latched but I just have the 2" pin (no gags please!) so I have to hold the release open while the other half gets into the boot!

Ford part?

Ah you see there's the probblem. As much as they don't tlike to see you drive fast or do illegal things. You're not supposed to put the other half into the boot for transport! There just isn't enough room for them along with the roof panels!

No problem as soon as its done I will post pics! The only issue I have at the moment is locating a bracket to attach the strut to the bootlid, I have one but its a little big? I may have to modify the old one! The other thing is the S3's & V8S gas struts seemed to have been bolted through the Petrol tank??? I think I will bolt mine through the wheel arch!

On a more serious note, you could try rigging up a temproary fix, maybe a bit of L shaped metal or somthing?

I doubt that they are fastened to the fuel tank itself, but you never know with TVR. There must be a bit of brecketry under there. I often wondered how S3+ owners stow their hoods as the position that the gas strut is in, thats where my panels go.

First successful bodge! (many to come methinks...)
basically put two new bolts through (the screws had stripped the thread in the steering column) with massive washers to overlap the split.
Put it all back together and now it functions as badly as it did when it left the factory (probably)

but it works!

Err! Wildfire why the name change is it due to a recent optometrically inclined misfortune or have you scored ONE HUNDREDDDD ANNNN FAAAWWTTYYY at darts or just fancied a name change to confuse the old boogers on here

Damn! just seen the piratical changes to the names of a number of other posters, seen the relevant thread and twigged!!!!!
Was'nt this previously done on 3rd August ?

Fitted the Gas strut over the weekend and ended up fixing an L shape bracket to the wheel arch and attaching the strut to that! Was difficult to find a bracket to fix it to boot lid but used a small bracket from a garden gate latch which works well (looks a lot better than it sounds) It doesnt interfere with where the roof panels go. Gas strut working fine, now just got to fit the solenoid and button! Was raining this morning so came to work in the other motor but will post pics of it tomorrow!

Mike's right, in my V8S the strut is attached to the fuel tank. As you say Roy you never know with TVR, I'm sure that every 'S' is different.

Here are the photos of the gas strut nothing exiting but may give you some idea of how I attached it to the car! Works well, the strut is the one used in the old Scimitar, any questions e-mail me!

Just got to fit the solenoid/switch and I will be a happy man!

Mike - please excuse my lack of tech knowledge - but how exactly does the gas strut work?

Is it just like a damper but full of gas?

Not entirely sure, not technically minded myself! pressurised gas I assume!! Maybe someone else could give a more accurate answer?
