Hello All,
The S has developed a clonk. When you take your foot on or off the gas it does it. A bit of feathering with the clutch seems to sort it - so I'm guessing that it's that the power uptake and drop off is quite sudden. I was wondering if it could be the throttle pot wearing out - any thoughts much appreciated.
Thanks,
WG

Yep - clonk - isn't a great description is it ! It's comming from the rear. I don't think it's the engine mounts - only because Peninsula replaced them all when they serviced her last month (was getting a clonk from the back then too).
Not sure how to disconnect the throttle pot - but I'm sure the bible will tell me. Obviously it's not intended to run the car without the throttle pot - what other weirdies would this introduce to the handling that I would need to discount when analysing what's going on ?
Thanks for your help guys,
WG

Ahaaa... its doubtless a Diff mount then.. getting a little loose ![]()
So you're saying that stopping the engine wiggling on it's collapsed mounts by replacing them has put stress onto something else in the transmission which has given up instead ?
Err no.. not unless your prop shaft joints are siezed solid at either end
.. Only that a Diff mount may be a little loose... its just a socket set job.
Cheers,
Matt.

Oh okay - a loose differential. Could be - certainly good news if it's just a socket set job. Not that I'd know a differential if it came up and slapped me round the face with a gloopy clump of waxoyl mind. Is it the big fella that the prop shaft slots into at the rear, that then drives the two drive shafts ?

Tadaa... excellent description
You produce quite a large twisting force by coming on and off power as the wheels drive the car when coming off the power, and the car drives the wheels when coming on the power... This twisting torque goes onto the diff mounts, so if one is a bit loose it will "clunk" as the diff itself rotates with the force. Basically its the diff knocking around in the mount.
Cheers,
Matt.
(of course it could be something else entirely
)Might be as simple as the exhaust slightly too close to the chassis, but more likely you're feeling backlash in the transmission. Could be wear and tear anywhere down the line, or worn/damaged diff mounts. I've even had one case where the diff output flanges weren't done up quite tight enough and it was shifting under torque reversals.

Check the rear exhaust mount. Mine recently became loose and it sounded like the rear suspension was falling apart.
Indeed.. although you would get this clanking about on uneven roads all the time rather than just noticing it on "torque reversal" (nice phrase pete !)
(unless perhaps if the engine mounts were really really soft.. but they've been replaced anyway.)
Matt.

Mmmm - just gave it a good wiggle - no play in it at all - rock solid infact. Thinking more it may be the diff mount. I've noticed just in the last week that the steering has been slightly wibbly - slight pulls to the left or right that don't quite fit in with the bumps on the road. Now if a diff mount was loose I could imagine that might cause uneven variations in the way the power got distributed to the wheels which would give a bit of rear end twist to the car. Sound plausible ? Or an award for BS

Not really I'm afraid - but the award will look very nice over the fireplace!
Aw thanks ! I shall treasure it. I'd like to thank my mom and my dad. All the people who filled my head up with words I don't really know the part no's to - all the little people who never get any thanks - my mechanic George ...
