had local garage look under the car today as it has begun making (speed related) clonking noises from underneath on deceleration. It sounded like exhaust knocking initially. Garage (friendly) advised me to take it to a more specialist concern, saying that the diff is on it's way out and to probably consider drive shafts too. Has anyone an idea of the likely cost of such an exchange/repair and could you recommend capable of doing it.

Make sure its not the bolts holding the diff in the cradle or the ones attaching the cradle to the chassis, both have a history of coming loose.
A bit cheaper than a replacement . Thats unless it was a TVR specialist that diagnosed it , in which case I would like to think these were checked.

Should be a managable job I would have thought if you're ok with some mech work. I would make sure you read up on the job first before attempting the work

I had knocking coming from the rear of my v8s on acceleration as the driveshafts went through a larger drive angle, on slowing it was silent

.. I just took the shafts off, greased them and fitted them the other way around .. result - one silent car in both directions! .

. try taking your driveshafts off, greasing them and turning them around : easy peasy job that'll only take a sunday afternoon and you might save a wad of cash!!

Agree with Joos on this one... knocking can be the shafts, or indeed can merely be a loose diff mount

Cheers,
Matt.

Cheers Guys
If I could get the car in the garage I would have a look myself as suggested. Because it sounds so serious, coupled to the fact that the bonnet is too low to use car ramps and it takes for ever to jack up on axle stands, I've booked it in to TopCats for them to have a look at it. I may crawl underneath and check the mounts on Sunday if it's not pouring with rain!
