I was crusing down the motorway the other day on the way to Manchester at a very legal 70mph when my speedo started fluctuating between 65 - 75 in jerky movements. Is there some sort of sensor or somthing that I can unplug and clean or somthing of do I have electrical gremlins?

Cheers

Chris, in my old S3 I had a very strange situation where the speedo fluctuated madly but only in 4th gear. Would flick between 25mph and 65mph. Previous owner tried everything to fix it and even sent it all off to speedy cables with no result.

For an unconnected reason I had to have the fuse box replaced and it fixed the wobbly speedo too. Have no idea why but might be worth playing around in the passenger footwell to see if anythings amiss.

Mine plays up when it gets hot on a long drive, still dunno why. I think V8S's have the same speedo, does yours only do it when it is hot. It dies and gives no reading for a few miles then springs back to life.

Mine started doing that just before xmas too.
Seems to be a mechanical problem in the speedo.

So TADTS (eventually)

Yep only after a few hours on the Mway. Just fluctuates between 65 - 70 then settles down for a bit. Just as long as it's not somthing on the way out. Don't think I can afford for that to happen.

Mine did exactly that for ages, couldn't figure out why.

Then one day the car stopped dead, turned out to be the infamous burnt-out connector block to the ignition switch.

After I fixed the connecter, the speedo was ok again. Worth a quick look!

Mine did that for a while, cleaned up all the connectors from the gearbox to the dash. It seems OK now, but still does it very rarely . Possibly the sender on the gearbox in my case, another little job for a quiet day .
