The S series which appeared to be such a good thing for TVR - at the time ... cheaper than the much better built and designed Wedge series of cars was .... flawed.

The engine - ford V6 powered, sounded second rate, have cam gear problems and was not in reality better that the old 3.0 V6 in replaced.

The body - well it replaced the M - which was better looking.

The roof - a real tale of two halfs.... which leaked .. a lot and it you were unlucky - well they took off - literally !

Interior - beer glasses (8 pints) .. well you would need them if you wanted to look at the cheap dashboard layouts on offer.. fake wood (painted by a 3 year old) or vinyl (same 3 year old employed..)

It really just looked like a poor man's MG really..

Why don't we see many on the roads no days ?

Your comments - Winner for TVR or Disaster ?

I can see this getting messy... if not locked quite quickly.

It was primarily cheaper as it took less time to build than the Wedges...

My roof has never leaked... or taken off...

Thought wedges had fake wood too... but if not, then I stand corrected..

Personally I see more S's than Wedges... take a look at most Mid-Essex and SE London & NW Kent meet photos...

Poor man's MG? Maybe, but the Wedge is a TR7 with a bad bodykit...

The S saved TVR... and without it, and Peter Wheeler, the company would not be where it is today, and that is a fact.

What is the purpose of these futile, snide remarks? Bored or something?

Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

To be honest, I'm feeling rather chilled and mellow this afternoon , so cannot really be bothered with arguing the point (I'm sure others will though.... get 'im boys!! ).

If I'm feeling a bit more argumentative later I come back with a few opinions of my own!!!!

Hmmm - well I must be blind, dumb and stoopid then. Never wanted a Wedge, they seem somehow so Miami Vice. Not that I've owned many great cars - but for all her quirks - I love my S to bits, far and away the best car I've ever had. And that's the only opinion that counts I'm afraid. My own. I imagine it's the same for you Alan.

A poor mans MG........? Strange analogy when most S Series cars cost a lot more than an old MG!

The only sensible thing you said in your post was that the S Series was such a good thing for TVR!! The V6 engine is quite reliable and as for sounding second rate.....second rate to what, an MG I think not?? I have a V8 with a S/S sports exhaust which sounds awesome but my old S2 sounded great too! Have you heard the sound a Cerbera straight six makes.........?

The S series is a pretty car which, lets be honest, definitely cannot be said of the 80's style Wedge??? You never see them on the roads and thank god as they are ugly, a TR7 that has been given the 'MAX POWER' treatment springs to mind! I may be wrong but the Wedge interior also has fake wood and Vinyl as did most TVR's up until a few years ago!!!

Lets answer your question on Winner or disaster....??

It has to be a winner because the S Series saved TVR from the mess the Wedge had got the company into.....? The wedge was so unpopular they didnt sell enough and the S Series bailed them out.......! Without the S Series TVR certainly would not be the company it is today...so definitely a WINNER

Are we comparing like with like?
The S was an improvement on the horrible FHC 280i Tasmin.
The V8S is nicer than the 350i/TR7 twins.
The SEAC was so expensive and poorly painted they made less than 20, the S restyle - The Griffith - was much more successful.

I've heard of cam gear issues on the 3.0 - Mum's Scimitar - not the 2.8/2.9

Body: Brought back the 3000S shape after the aberation that was the wedge, but yes I think the later M series bonnet was better than the asymetrical S one.

Roof - fair comment, but easier to store than the griff, the 3000S was a rag top, but you did have side- screens to store.

I like the S1 dash, but granted the reflections at night are terrible.

Oh you forgot the incredibly low exhaust

Much better than the MG B, my brother has one. The RV8 was just strange!

Loads in Hampshire!

So the S was a winner, it rescued the company, unlike the tasmin which nearly killed it.

Tasmins - so unloved they went banger racing!

All in the Spirit of the original post!

Look forward to your EVO article on the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Hey guys - Just trying to re-write history with a really biased view...

The wedges were too late .. history wise .. But myself and other's still love 'em...

The S series .. they were good for TVR .. they are OK really..

Oh - yes. The exhausts are too low .. probably as bad as mine .. 5 inches clearance according to the book !
