cold start issues

any tips? I'm turningover fine, plenty of leccie, no visible sparks, (penty of fuel too), just not firing.
And it's too bloomin cold to walk.
Can you smell any petrol? If the fuel system is working, you'll almost certainly have flooded it by now. You'll need to let it dry out for a while, this time of year it can take a while so if you're handy with the spanners put the plugs over a gas ring otherwise just leave it alone for half an hour or so and then try again. Still doesn't answer the question why it didn't fire up. Are you getting a spark at the plugs? If you have an immobiliser, are you sure it was disarmed? In daylight, you probably won't see stray sparks so give all the HT leads a clean with WD40 and route them as far away from each other and the engine as you can.
The immobiliser is disarmed, I assume, cos it's turning over. I have noticed a crack and a bit of missing plastic on the oil terminals. Could I be suffering from that? the sparks from the leads are weak, but it always has ben. Guess the cold could be too much for them.
replacing the coil is just about within my capabilities, but I've never mucked about with leads before. can halfords provide everything I need? I'll get some WD40 on the way home.

Don't worry thats where we all started !
The golden rule with leads is that if you are going to disconnect and reconnect any then do them one at a time or label them before you start to avoid getting them mixed up and altering the firing order.
On a different tack my fuel pump relay failed last year giving similar symptoms - the engine would turn over but not fire as no fuel was getting pumped. With this scenario you wont get the petrol smell from flooding. A good indication if your fuel pump is one that primes when the ignition is switched on is that the whirring noise is not there - this was the giveaway for me. Unfortunately they dont all have this priming sequence (see other threads on fuel pumps)
Hope this helps and good luck with the learning curve as it does get quite satisfyingwhen you cure things !!
seems you were right, brownie poinmt to you. had to call out last night as was stranded. Me4chanic managed to get the engiine to run on pure 'damp start', checked all teh electrics, fine, so it is the fuel. In the garage beng sorted now - way beyond me all this.
It better be goood in summer, s'all I can say.
