I've had this S3 for five years and I'm bloody sure it's only just started doing this. Is it a forewarning that my accelerator cable is about to snap?

When the engine is switched off and I press the accelerator pedal, it doesn't return to the raised postion. I have to physically lift it back up again. Once the engine is running it accelerates fine, pedal working normally.

This seems to be intermittent as I left it running for a bit today then when I switched off the pedal was working fine.

I've checked for the carpet sticking! And can see no faults with the cable. Is there some sort of gas strut that pushes the pedal back up again. Any clues?

mine did the same, turned out to be
a pipe catching the throttle lever on the carb.when you take your foot off the the pipe stops the lever returning.

may be due to certain parts expanding or cotracting due to heat and cold. While it may be binding due to the cold, once the engine has warmed them up, they are fine.

Just a thought.

Sounds like something is sticking, maybe the vibration from the engine is just enough to overcome the friction? There's nothing special to lift the pedal up, just a spring closing the throttle (at the engine end) which in turn pulls the cable and pulls the pedal up. Could be either the spring has failed, the throttle spindle is jamming, or the cable is sticking. You should be able to work out which it is by moving the throttle spindle and cable by hand.
