Hi All
I have just come back from Toronto’s International Auto Show. I was on the hunt for information on new Tires for my car. Right now I have the original Bridgestone RE 71. I’m looking to upgrade as they are starting to get old. Yeah Yeah I know the tires are 14 years old. The last owner didn’t drive it much. This one will. I have been looking at Kumho or Toyo.
Any advice?

Trouble is SO2's only come in 55 profile. If you don't mind the lower ground clearance this brings, they are a superb tyre. Otherwise the Bridgestone RE720 seem the next option.

Agreed.

OK on (wet) track days too.

RE720s are as good as, if not better than, RE71s

Is anybody running Kumho or Toyo? I can't afford any lower ground clearance.

I'm running Goodyear F1's with 60 profile, same class of tyre as the SO2 PP's IMO and should be redily available. Superb in the wet and in the dry the car can corner faster and tighter than I can, which means I get thrown out of my seat sideways.

I have just bought a set of Bridgestone RE720s for £70
per tyre(fitted,balanced inc vat)

I got them from Tanvic www.tanvictyres.co.uk.

Iwas expecting a wait but they had them in stock so what I thought was going to a long search was sorted in an hour.
It should be a big improvement on the 8 year old Pirelli 5000s that were on before (hopefully)

Well I started this thread and I thought it had die but I’m glad to see it has life left in it as I have more questions. First let me start by saying I had my car out for the first time and with the top down on Saturday. Boy have I missed top down driving. It’s been 5 years since my MGB was sold.
Now to the tires. I thought I would push the RE71 on Sunday’s drive to see if they were done. Much to my surprise they stuck like sh** to a blanket. So I think I have time to find a replacement set. That’s good.
I see you guys talking about Bridgestone RE720 we don’t get those. We have a 750 it is more an all season and apparently not all that good. This site is the USA but a lot of Canadians buy from here to get a better selection. www.tirerack.com The Pirellis (P6000) don’t get good reviews here either. Here is what I can get here so far. Toyo Proxes TPT, Kumho Ecsta, Michelin Pilot XGT V rated, Good Year F1, Bridgestone Potenza RE910, and a Tire that is trying to make a come back here Dunlop Sport 01. Nobody knows anything about the Dunlop’s over here.
I’m open to all and any comments on the tires above and other suggested tires.
I have also heard the RE71 was dropped by Bridgestone but is built by their sister Firestone under a different name. True? I do like the RE71 seem like great tires. Or maybe that is just the car!

Why don't you just get the Bridgestone SO3's in a slightly lower 55 profile. Most serious performance Tiv drivers seem to rate them very highly and they're available in your part of the world, job done .

Hi Harry I just read the specs on those. They look great. And yes I can get them here. My problen is that I have an after market custom SS exhaust and it seems lower than a stock one. I ground out to often now and lower profile will only make that worse. How much of a difference did it make? I'm still interested in hearing about the Dunlop Sport 01. Anybody?

A 55 profile should drop the car 1/4 inch.

I can definitely recommend the Goodyear F1, especially in the wet and it comes in 60 profile. Don't hear much about Dunlop tyres over here anymore.

Of course if you up the width a bit, the reduction in profile is reduced.. compare *

195/60 = 117mm Wall width
195/55 = 107.25mm wall width
205/55 = 112.75mm Wall Width
*205/60 = 123mm Wall Width
*225/55 = 123.75mm Wall Width

Cheers
Matt

Is there any rubbing or are they to hard to steer (read turn in a parking lot)when you go up to the 225/55/15

Depends from car to car... in theory there shouldn't be a problem but best to check there is no fouling at the front... steering would be a bit heavier I assume, but you're only adding 10% in width.
