repainting the outriggers :-(
Discussion
Any volunteers to do the offside outrigger for me please
I've done the nearside one..
The pics dont show up too well but the top has also been painted
It took a Sunday PM and 4 evenings to finally get that little bit done
Its a bu66er of a job cleaning the top bit using all sorts of tools including screwdrivers, paint scrapers, flattened out 15mm copper pipe with the end bent over, and a hacksaw blade which id bent into a 3/4 circle. This was a very usefull tool considering the access is somewhat limited
Now just to waxoyl and move over to the offside outrigger and then the two rear seat belt mounts (and area). Everything is solid at the mo so i've decided to repaint everything must be mad
So any tips for the other bits? i.e tools etc

Nice one Pies.
This is a job I intend to undertake later in the year sometime. Like yours, my chassis is sound, but has one or two 'bare' patches with some surface corrosion which need rubbing down, painting and Waxoyling.
Are you using Hammerite, or something else?
Have read so much on the best chassis paints (POR15, etc), it can be confusing.
Have seen your website write up on painting the front chassis. Are you going to add a description of this work?

por15 is perfectly safe if used with the right equipment ie an organic vapour mask and good ventilation, and lots of gloves. although easier with the body off i orignally did the full rear section initially with the body on.with the body ofd ,i did my whole chassis in this (ie bare metal areas of where poweder coat had failed) with a top layer of primer and restoleum

I'm wondering if it is possible to raise the body by an inch or so on one side without major problems/hassle to get to the top of the outirgger a bit easier..?
Some garages have repaired/replaced outriggers by that method, so I assume you can.
A good point was raised by someone (Chris?) at VW the other week. Why not manufacture a shield to prevent water and dirt being thrown into this area? Sheet aluminium should do the trick.

I used paint called Epoxy Mastic from www.rust.co.uk because of this problem with Por15. Personally I think Epoxy products are second to non for durability. What also swayed me was that Epoxy Mastic came out top in a paint test carried out in Practical Classics Mag.
I've tried Hammerite on the chassis found the rust came through in small pinheads after about a year. Also, the smoothrite seemed very susceptible to Stone chips. IMHO 2 coats of rust converter, then 2 coats of Epoxy Mastic followed by a cosmetic red top coat (Hammerite smoothrite is OK for this), is the way to go. Just my opinon of course.
