Brake Problems
Discussion
I have just fitted braided brake hose's, when trying to bleed the brakes i am getting air in the system, can't find any leaks thought it might be a faulty master cylinder
Can anyone tell me which brake master cylinder was used on my 1989 S1.5 it is the model with the seperate fluid resovoir and how much a replacement would be.

Daft question, was there a major problem with the brakes before you fited the braided hoses, beyond they could be improved upon
.
The reason I ask is that if the only thing you have done is change the hoses and you can't get the air out of the system, then I would look at what you are doing first before stripping down and blaming the rest of the system which you may not have touched.
If however you had problems with air before changing the hoses then carry on

How exactly are you bleeding them? Are you using an easy bleed jobbie or a jam jar? What order are you doing them in? And are you making sure that the reservoir is kept full while you pump the pedal?
Sorry if it's a bit patronising, but I've seen people spend ages bleeding brakes not realising that they were emptying the reservoir each time and re-injecting air into the system, and those that don't get the end of the bleed pipe submerged.
IIRC the bleed sequence should be offside front, nearside front, offside rear, then nearside rear. I'm not too sure about the order of the rears, but the rule of thumb is to do the shortest pipe length first, moving through to the longest last.

Just to add: don't undo the bleed screw more than a quarter turn, as it can draw air back in past the threads if it's loose.

Where did you get your braided hoses from and how many hoses were in the kit. Ive been trying to get some but havnt found a supplier.
Tower View normally have them in stock.
It can be quite surprising how much fluid it can take to get all the air out. I normally reckon on close to a litre! I use an Easibleed pressure bleeder and simply go round the callipers several times until I get no air after running a reasonable amount of fluid through.

Steve, I got my braided hoses from R T Racing at Sheffield they advertise in the sprint mag,
I ended up with six hoses 4 front 2 rear but when I rebuilt it, I re-routed the pipes and only used 2 on the front so I have 2 for sale if you are intrested give me a e-mail and we can sort something out.

ibb are you sure that the 6 hoses are not for 2 on the front and 4 on the rear . Don't forget that there are flexi-hoses either end of the rear trailing arms, both should be changed for the full benefit IMHO

When I stripped the hoses down there was two either side on the front and one either side on the rear.
On my car it's a solid brake pipe that fits into the brake slave cylinder and a flexi hose at the other end.If this is wrong can you please let me know. Cheers Ibb
