Mirrors again! Replacement needed.
Discussion
Hi all
To add to my list of woes some f
r has just knocked the passenger side mirror of my car causing the electric motor not to function and the collapsable colum inside to shear, which means it is all lose and vibrates annoyingly when driving.
Now I'm not too happy about this, but I'll ahev to get a new one.
Anybody any idea where I can get one? It is the later style ones with the O rings on them. I'll send them home to get resprayed and then when I'm South again in May I'll get them replaced.

Good Luck!
Hi Chris,
P.R. Wood import new ones which should set you back about £70 plus painting - see this thread for details.
Hope that helps,
Richard

Cheers Richard, does that include all the internals?
I have spoken to David Batty, he has said that if it is just the collapsible column that is broken, it can probably be fixed. Rather than buying new mirror, casing etc. So when I am next South I will goo down to his garage and he will check if it can be fixed. Fingers crossed.

AAAAAaaaand Relax.
This happens all the time with the Chimaera's and is easy (and cheap) to fix.. I've posted the details quite a few times on here so I'll track down the thread and post the link shortly. (fixed one of mine in about an hour including tea-breaks)
Cheers
Matt

..some of this lot should help you out.
or just do a search for Mirror Tripod in the Chim forums (thats the bit you've broken I assume) >> Edited by M@H on Tuesday 27th April 10:02
Cheers Matt
Ok so if I understand correctly this is what I do:
Remove Speaker
Remove Door Trim
Unclip Cables for mirror
I unscrew the the mirror off the door by winding it anticlockwise? This is the whole thing, the Mirror, stem and all.
Undo the grub screw?
Then I buy a new tripod, fit that to the mirror.
Screw the mirror, tripod assembly and all back on and then do up the grub screw.
Clip up electrics, replace door trim and speakers.
Sorry for all the questions just I've no real facilities to do this aside from the street, so I need to be totally clear on what to do.
Is there any chance someone could post some pics showing me what bits to unscrew etc.
Cheers for all the help again.
Any idea why the electrics in the mirror have packed up aswell? Is there any way I can test the switch or motor?
When I flick the switch up and down you can hear a relay gclicking from under the dash, but no motor movement. Although the right side does work. I don't want to buy a new tripod and then have to replace the whole mirror.

Basically yep.. no need to remove door trim though (on the chimaera anyway) as you work through the speaker hole.. you've only got to undo a connector block and thread some cable.
You'll probably find that the whole tripod will snap off when you try and rotate the mirror around so watch your paintwork with the ends.. If that happens you can use the broken bits left sticking out of the door to put a long screwdriver or similar across them for some torque to undo the collar from the door.
It is pretty self explanatory once you've started. A couple of further points:
You will need a STAR DRIVE to undo the tripod from inside the mirror section..(don't bother thinking you'll manage with an Allen key) one like a screwdriver with a star end is better than one on a socket as you've not got much room to thread it up inside the tripod and mirror. (this has to be done up VERY tight)
If the tripod starts spinning around on the collar in the door, rather than the big thread undoing, try getting the grub screw to a position where you can undo it, either that or try and rotate the collar in the door by gripping it with some other means. Also try rotating the tripod right round as the grub screw might find some purchase further round the collar.
An remember if it all goes pearshaped and you get scared, remove the cable from the door anyway (you'll have to disasemble the connector block at the speaker hole) and put the mirror in the boot, then seek help..
I drove around for a week with a bit of tape across the thread hole and just one mirror until I had a sunny day to replace mine.
Cheers,
Matt
Edited to add... Electrics, pass... but how often do you adjust your mirror...? you could probably live with that for a while I reckon?

Just noticed you've got one bit wrong..
Unclip Cables for mirror
Yes, this is a connector block behind the speaker.
I unscrew the the mirror off the door by winding it anticlockwise? This is the whole thing, the Mirror, stem and all.
All of it.. (or whatever's left if it snaps off)
Undo the grub screw?
Yes, and don't loose it either.. the new Tripod may well not come with it... Note the position that the grub screw is located on the Tripod (assuming it didn't spin around) and mark it with something, that way when you re-assembly you can put it in the same place again.
Then I buy a new tripod, fit that to the mirror.
Yes, although I would reccomend purchasing it first as you can then assemble the mirror Tripod etc together with the dis-assembly in mind as per above..also fit it to the threaded collar.
Screw the mirror, tripod assembly and all back on and then do up the grub screw.
Nope.. assemble the whole lot including the collar, having lined up the grub screw with the mark off the old tripod (you have to transpose the mark off the old one onto the new unbroken one if you know what I mean), then screw the whole lot into the door. Assuming your grub screw mark was in the right place, the mirror collar thread should "tighten" against the thread in the door with the mirror in the right place.. If it doesn't, simply unwind it and adjust the position by slackening the grub screw, sliding the Tripod around the collar a bit, then re-tightening, and trying again
Clip up electrics, replace door trim and speakers.
Correct
Ensure that the wire from the mirror goes "outside" the window runners inside the door too or you won't get the window wound down.. Also bear in mind that as you rotate the mirror around, this cable has to rotate aroundin the door.. if things don't feel right, check that this cable isn't twisting itself up into a knot.
Cheers
Matt.

Thanks Matt, you're a lifesaver. I probably won't attempt it until I get home to Surrey later on in the month. I can live without it for the moment.
I will try and do a guide using your advice for Pies' site along with the one for the wipers I'm doing.
I may have to call upon you're advice later on when I attempt it.
Cheers
Chris
