Without several pounds of flaky old waxoyl.?

After several days scraping crap off the chassis I've discovered it's red (apart from the previously replaced outriggers which are black)

Despite the ballsache of a job, the good news its in remarkable shape, only the odd place here and there where the coating has come off which require some rubbing down and painting. Although I haven't got to the tank cradle yet which might be a different story..

Flakey waxotl? Never encountered that before. Are you sure it's waxoyl and not some other kind of covering (not that it matters much anyway I suppose).

It's not the Waxoyl that's flakey, it's the rust it's attached to. Best get it all off; it hides a multitude of sins! Much better when you can see the chassis in the flesh I reckon.

Couldn't agree more - I reckon 90% + of the original red powder coat is still there.

That's part of the problem, it may be there but is it still attached?

It'll be interesting to see if I can feel any difference in Samy's performance after the rebuild. I think she'll have lost 80-100Kgs with the various changes being made.

..the 10% missing paint lets the water in and the 90% remaining holds the water against the steel!...may just take that paint off as well and save even more weight...then as the chassis starts to rot you will save more weight until you reach that sweet spot where weight is minimum, but the chassis hasn't quite failed the the MOT...

Alternatively...add stripes..that always make cars go faster.. wink

I know a couple who relish chassis restoration, they love getting all that crud off.
With it all exposed they set to work,
She scrubs and strips while he scrapes the paint and wax off...
