Hi

Wonder if anyone can offer any help/advice.

The red battery light glows faintly on tick over and becomes more bright as the engine is revved.

If i need a new alternator where would be best place to get one?

Thanks in anticipation.

It sounds like the diodes are on the way out. A couple of options are to purchase a rebuild kit and replace just the diodes or take it to someone and get it repaired, both options are fairly cheap. Whatever you do, don't exchange it for another one. You are unlikely to get an alternator of the same quality as a friend of mine found out recently when he exchanged his Magnetti Marelli alternator for some expensive Chinese tat from a respected supplier of TVR spares; it failed straight away. If yours is the original MM alternator, hang on to it at all costs.

Edited for spelling

There you go, nice and cheap, and you have a spare when the old one is repaired.

Tony.
If you are useful with a soldering iron it is an easy enough job to do yourself.

You don't even need a soldering iron on the Magneti Marelli Alternator - absolute piece of pi55 to change the diode pack.
Just disconnect the battery first which I hope is obvious.

Before you do anything check the earth strap which on mine ran from the bracket under the alternator to the chassis.
There is also a small gauge earth which is a right fatherless thing to get at at the back of the passenger side cylinder head.

When my alternator played up a few years ago I took off the diode pack and found that the brushes where stuck in the holder by a build up of what I presume was carbon. Gave them a good clean and freed them up and it's given no trouble since.
