1st attempt at MoT since massive rebuild.....
Discussion
Cheers guys. I've got driveshaft swapping time down to about 45mins now, so I'll pop another cheapo joint in there for now and see if I can get it through the test Monday. It might just have been a dodgey joint - of course it happened because I had a customer in not a few hours before, and I said "We always use the GKN joints on customer cars, but on my own car I've just put some cheaper ones on it - I worked in parts for years, and I bet there's no difference at all!"
Either I had a dodgey joint, or I'm about to have egg on my face, and a bill for two new GKN CV joints!

Annnnnd.....it turns out the cheapo CV joints are useless as they can pull apart into their component pieces with little or no effort. The GKN ones need to be rolled through 40deg or so before you can split the inner cage, but the factor versions (part no. TDL3018) just pull apart without the need to play with angles. It was obviously easier for the outer race to detach from the inner than it was to settle the bearings in both joints. That means the opposite side will likely suffer the same fate, so I need to change both to GKN.
I should point out these are the 108mm joints I had to use on the Cossie diff, so being that 98% of S' use the 100mm joints, this won't be relevant to you!

Hi
If you want good CV joints, use the GKN MS3N044, I got mine from Race Parts, they do them in 32mm and 40mm.

Would you like to tell us the brand name of the joints which failed so others don't get caught out? Were they made in China by any chance?AMK, part no TDL3018. TDL3017 is the number for the standard 100mm joints the S uses, and these don't have the problem as they're a different design. I'll get some pics.
Tested the TVR parts type which is like GKN, but not, and so far no issues. Let's see what happens tomorrow though!

t itself, just shy of the MoT centre. Brilliant
On the plus side, I've found the limited-slip diff has sufficient grip to keep me moving, even on one driveshaft!
