Quick question for all you knowledgeable types...

Does my S3 have a rev-limiter? I ask as my tacho is a little pessimistic in its readings (it doesn't like going above 3000rpm really, as this is out of its comfort zone).

I therefore change up when my mechanical sympathy kicks in. However, I'm going on at least one track day, and would like to know whether I have the safety net of a rev limiter or whether the engines safety is all on me.

Thanks as always...

Yes they do, electronically limited. I found out as I tried to change up to fifth and got third, was quick enough to push clutch back in to avoid damage and probably only just over rev limit as I wasn't going that fast but braking effect was quite considerable as rear wheels came close to locking

This was some time ago though

First answer...depends, are you married and does your wife go in your car... wink

Second answer...don't really know, but should be able to red Lin comfortably ...about 5k?...so, could be an issue if you have problems above 3k

Cheers for the reply guys. I had hoped it had a limiter.

Re not revving - the car is fine. The tacho is a bit slow to react though, so unless I absolutely pin the throttle, it doesn't really get near the red line...

I am pretty sure I hit a limiter a couple of times at Snetterton at 6500rpm. S3C.

If I can ask a question related to the above...do these rev counters generally tend to be a bit sluggish?
When I blip the throttle mine seems reluctant to register the extra revs, and it seems to decrease slowly as well.
On the other hand the V6 does seem to have the lazy response of an engine with a heavy flywheel.

When I stopped at a tollbooth in France on a recent Eurotour to pay my toll fee,
the rev counter was showing 3500rpm even though the engine was just idling.
Even the irate horn blowing of the French motorists behind me did not alter the spurious reading. ( Why do they put the toll booth paynent machines on the wrong side in France? I can see Joe's point of view, sometimes the French can be deliberately obtuse )
However I did notice a sort of restraining hand when I changed down to third going into Chicago? the twiddly bit after Eau Rouge at Spa.
But that may have been my passenger.
Whatever, the main rev limitation occurs when valve bounce sets in....

I think the performance of the rev counter is more likely to be a wiring issue. Tamy sometimes gets stuck on 80mph.
