2.9, which clutch
Discussion
Hi All,
My engine core plug problem has turned into an engine out job. Since the engine and gearbox will be out of the car I plan to change all the seals and gaskets along with the clutch. I have done a lot of research online but I'm struggling to identify which clutch kit I need to buy. It seems likely that my S3 has a 2.9 flywheel married to a Type 9 gearbox normally found on the 2.8. There is also a suggestion that the cover plate of a standard Sierra clutch will need machining. Has anyone managed to source the correct clutch kit? Or shall I just replace the clutch friction plate if the cover plate looks OK?

From the alternative parts list:
Cover plate 89GB7563AA
Friction Disc 89GB7550AA.... I presume these are Ford part numbers, a good motor factor may be able to cross reference them?
From memory I thought both parts were Capri 2.8?
Don't recall any comments about having cover plates machined/modified to fit, that's providing you get the right one to start with

I am pretty sure you will find that you have a 2.8 flywheel as this is the norm when using a type 9 with a 2.9 engine. I have posted these before but here are the two flywheels side by side for comparison. It seems likely that my S3 has a 2.9 flywheel married to a Type 9 gearbox normally found on the 2.8.

With regards to the clutch, I purchased a complete kit for a 2.8i Capri and whilst not yet fitted, when compared visually, it appeared identical to my old clutch.
Hope that is some help.
Carl.
During my body off refurb we stuck a new clutch kit in, used a standard Sierra 3 in 1 kit. Originally ordered a Borg n Beck HK9579 as I wanted a reliable brand. But the Motor Factor had no stock and instead of telling me that they sent me a National clutch kit CK9204 (it's the usual trick of the parts trade...). Anyway the National kit was £71 all told, cover, plate and bearing. It's fitted, bite point is higher than the old one but it works fine. So I think the standard Sierra kit is all you need.
