S3 starter motor problem

When I tried to start the car at the weekend the starter motor made a sound like jack hammer and did not engage. Is this a known problem with a known solution, or is it a matter of working through the usual suspects of checking all connections etc?

Check your battery is well charged. Lots of clicking but no starting is usally indicative of low battery.
If it still doesn't work with a charged battery or jump start, check + wiring connections from battery to starter and eatrh connections at battery, engine and chassis.
