I put an uprated type 9 onto my Taimar recently. (My type 5 was beyond repair) and Adrian@ was able to modify the type 5 bell housing for about £100.
Hi Tony, do you know what the modification consisted of? I've seen this adaptor plate but ad says some machining also required?I understand there are two main versions of the Type 9, those from V6 engine cars (including the S Series) have a longer first motion shaft to the more commonly available gearbox's from 4 cylinder cars? Do you know which you have?
Final question, any idea what speedo drive gear you have, from memory they are different colours for different ratio's?
Any help or advice on this gearbox upgrade will be most gratefully received!
Mike.
Hi Mike
I actually used the type 9 from my S3 as I have replaced it with an MT 75 to suit the cossie engine. So it is the V6 type with longer input shaft. I was going to re-build it myself but opted in the end to have the bearings and lays shaft etc upgraded to suit the torque from the Essex engine.
The bell housing from my old type 5 did not seem to need much work. A couple of holes welded up and a couple drilled, plus a pice of squar tube welded in to suit the lay shaft poking through the gearbox casing. For what it cost, I opted to let Adrian@ use his experience and jigs to get it just right. He can also supply a new rear support for the rear gearbox mount and a quick shift gearbox kit so it feels a bit more like the old box to drive!
It then uses the same prop shaft and clutch.
On mine I needed to change the rear casing so it had a mechanical speedo output rather than electrical, and I can find the gearing for you tomorrow, when I can dig out the info. Worked a treat with no further speedo calibration needed.
I also needed to make a gear lever, rather like the S one, since it mounts about 5" behind where it comes through into the cabin.
I think that's about it. I'll try to remember and sort out the speedo gear used tomorrow - Nudge me if I forget !

Thanks Tony, that helps a lot

My Taimar has a T5 (or could be T50) 5 speed but I'm not "over the moon" with it so as I have a spare S Series box I fancy slipping that in now that I know I don't need a super rare (= super expensive) special bellhousing.
The mechanical speedo drive won't just pop back in the hole when I take the electronic sender out then?
I don't think it has the means of fixing a mechanical drive in that side. Since it is on the other side of the box it may even turn the wrong way if you could do it (?)
The guy who did my bearing upgrades also provided the rear casing to suit mechanical speedo. Although type 9 bits are beginning to get short in supply, I was told they are pretty common still.

Here is a pic of the gearbox. Speedo ratio looks like 6/24.
You can see that the electrical side has been blanked and the mechanical output comes from the drivers side as it did on the type 5.
You can also see Adrian's rear cross member - needed because the rear mounting needs to be slightly further back.

I hope this helps. Tony.
