It may very well be that the end of the wire has broken or become too weak to stay in place. Easy solution is to get an R pin of similar thickness (bet I could do it with a kirby grip!) and put it through the hole in the lever in the lock then use one part of an electrical 'chocolate block' terminal strip to join them together. It also provides adjustment. It is a fairly well used tip now and even appears in Car Builder Solutions.
If you look up inside the door at the lock, you'll see a flat pressed-steel lever that sticks up and forwards, with a wee hole in the end. If you pull the lever forwards toward the front of the car, the door opens. The bed in the end of that cable goes through the hole in that lever. It's not fixed in or anything, it just goes through the hole.
There is another wee similar lever with a rod that goes up to the "lock" button in the top of the door trim - make sure that is "up" before you try the first lever (I know, it sounds obvious, but simple things can leave you puzzled for ages. Or is that just me?)

Come on someone with a late car please. Surely it shouldnt be that shape and it has either broken or bent in some way. I cant be exactly sure as mine is an earlier car but surely the wire should be straight with a kink or hook at the end only?
Maybe, but that's what the cables on my car look like! This might help.......... old thread on door locks
Can't be sure without having the bits in front of me but either the bend, marked yellow, should go through the lock and be more of a U bend or the end, marked orange, should be the U bend and has snapped off.

It is a fairly straighforward and common type of Ford lock so your local garage should have come across it before.
However if you look at Phillpots post above he has linked to a previous thread on which he posted a photograph (8th October 2012) which shows the lock. You are looking at attaching at point 3 on his photo.
If the lock is still attached to the door it should be pretty easy to see that only one of the three attachment points will pull horizontally and release the lock. There should be fairly obvious hole to attach the wire to.

If all else fails turn the bit that latches onto the pin on the B post till it clicks into the closed position then twiddle everything else until it springs into the open position. Whatever you twiddled is what that bit of bent wire needs to pull
This shows catch in door open position, as door closes latch turns in direction of arrow

Have you followed the link to that old thread? S2Mike's photo probably shows it best.
It's a classic TVR "make do" job, you're not looking for something that's a precision fit!
