I’m trying to locate S Series inner tie rods. There have been previous discussion about the racks but I have not been able to find inner tie rods. I’m in Canada so the cars here are left hand drive but I don’t thing from what I’ve researched there should be a difference in the rods from right hand drives. I know that the actual steering racks were made by Cam Gears for the later generation (up to about 1985) Vauxhall Chevette but with what I believe to be some kind of 1987 – 93 Ford Sierra two wheel drive inner tie rod. The length is 276 mm but if longer could be shortened. I’ve attached a photo with the specs showing the ends and thread sizes. The biggest problem seems to be finding the correct attachment of the rod to the rack. This seems to be particular to the Cam Gears racks. I would love to get an OEM Ford part number or good alternative numbers. If anyone knows who has these and willing to ship to Canada that would be helpful too. I’m surprised that I have not been able to find any numbers!!!!

This one has always been a bit of a mystery!

over the years Lotus and Ford have been mentioned but no definitive source or donor car.

A company called Kiley Clinton are the "go to" in the UK, the name will no doubt be familiar to you if you've done any searching here on PH.

I don't know whether they have a source and possibly only supply as part of a complete steering rack overhaul or whether they have the facilities to recondition worn out items?

There is some information out there, on PH or Facebook Group, from a guy who fitted a Ford Escort rack

Myself and one or two others have fitted a Subaru power steering rack yes

Thanks for the reply. I was actually going to give Kiley Clinton a call tomorrow to see if
they could help. Yes I have gotten very frustrated over this. It's for a customer's car!
Also very interesting about the Subaru power steering. I wonder if I could
adapt it to fit left hand drive? What year and model was that from? Still have to find
the tie rods for this car though

I have collected all the parts for a power steering installation but haven't got around to fitting any of it yet. rolleyes

There is all the info you are likely to need on the excellent http://www.tvrgit.com/ site. This is what I used to help identify all the required components.

If you look under the 'How to' section you should find it.

Subaru Imprezza but I don't recall which years, I imagine they were also sold in left hand drive?

This is what gave me the idea, there is rather a lot of it . . . . . . . .

Getting back to the original tie rods in your photo, where does the wear occur, on the ball end, in the threaded cup or a bit of both?

The wear is in both areas. We tried machining the ball to clean it up but then discovered wear in the cup which end with a sharp edge that statred cutting into the ball again. So the long and short of it is we need the complete inner tie rod complete with the ball nut.

The original manual steering rack derived from Vauxhall Chevette / Opel Kadett. These are the models that ran from mid 70's to mid 80's.
