Hi folks. my S2 is messing about when ticking over, sometimes it idles at 1200rpm and then other times it idles ok them cuts out or goes to stall and then comes up again. have taken out the idle speed control valve and cleaned it out, changed the ign leads and replaced the coil. Any thoughts. PS were can I get "ford" engine parts as when I rang Ford they are looking "my back teeth" as well as all my money.

Do these things sense that summer is on the way or what? Mine started doing it too last week. Cleaned everything and it still did it. Eventually tried disconnecting it and the car now runs better than ever. It returns nicely to idle and runs considerably smoother. The only down side at the moment is that it doesn't fast idle when cold. Does anyone know the long term effects of leaving it disconnected?

Find your local scrap dealer and hunt down the various Ford models with your engine.

Remove idle control valves, throttle pots, and any other bits that appeal - alloy rocker covers! Go to the man at the gate and plead poverty and expect to pay no more than a couple of quid.

Yes, some of these bits will be in similar or worse condition than your own. Some will be in good working order - they get changed on Fords as often as they seem to need changing on an S.

Also make a point of visiting your local scrap dealer on a regualr basis to hunt down any new stock. Sierra's and Granada's are meat & potateos to scrap yard dealers. The cars end up there mainly due to corrosion and not from engine component failures.

If nothing else, you will identify the source of your problem and can then spend the £60+ for new parts with a degree of confidence.

I had a similar problem that I think was caused by multiple problems but these are the things I did and it idles lovely now.

Removed and cleaned the idle valve, including the connector which was covered in oil.
Re-installed idle valve using a new gasket (50p from Ford garage).
Checked wiring back from idle valve and throttle pot, to the joint located under the coil, with a multimeter, found poor soldered connections that I cut out and re-soldered.
Cleaned out throttle butterflys and vane meters plus checked over hosework from the air filter to the throttle body to make sure there were no air leaks.
Degreased, cleaned and lubricated with a light oil, the butterfly actuators on the throttle body as the butterfly's were not completely closing.
Also sorted out the oil breather that feeds into the throttle body as it was collapsing under vacuum.

I might add I didn't do this all at once just kept finding different things that could be affecting the idle and fixing them. The wiring seemed to sort out the stalling problem and cleaning the throttle actuators stopped it from idling at 1500-2000 rpm.

Good Luck
