Clutch replacement?
Discussion
I'm looking for somewhere local to me that will do a good job for a fair price. After 173k miles the MX5 clutch has final asked to retire, and I've been told by several people that it is about 3 hours work and a fair price for supply and fit is IRO £300.
However, I'm getting quotes of £100 more than that; anyone here recommend someone near to Verwood that is likely to come up with something more in the right region? MX5Parts supply a clutch at about £100 I think, so £190 labour at about £50/hour gives the expected three hours plus nearly an hour float.
The clutch hasn't died completely so it is OK to drive short distances.
TIA

You could do worse than £400 in todays climate. I pray the day I see a £400 clutch.
Ah, well with your beast and the one that will be back to me soon I doubt that either of us would see anything for less than £400.However, too many peeps have said that £300 is what to expect - especially in this climate when prices are competitive.

Competition is one thing but with the increased labour rates and material costs n'all............However, too many peeps have said that £300 is what to expect - especially in this climate when prices are competitive.
If you can get it for £300 all in then fair play mate.

Yeah, well most people agree that it's 3 hours and at a pretty standard £50/hour plus £110 for the clutch we could be looking at £300 and a bit of slack for the guys in case it runs over a tad. We'll see I guess....If you can get it for £300 all in then fair play mate.

Hi Luke. Got it done for about 3.5 hours labour at the Bournemouth Mini Centre that Nick suggested. Total cost was about £350 - would have been a bit cheaper if I'd bought the clutch myself from MX5Parts.
Hi T40ORA.Autodata says the clutch takes 3 hours to do, so 3.5 hours is right if you include testing afterwards etc.
(most garages use the Autodata software to show work times for repairs and servicing, as do we)
We charge £48.00 per hour so the labour would have been £168.00 + VAT for the clutch change.
Yes, don't forget the VAT folks - plenty of garages don't tell you until they present you with the bill and it's very nasty stuff. Turns a £300 job into a £360.00 job.
Always make sure you ask about the VAT when you get a quote for any car work.
Glad you got a good deal on it.
Cheers,
Doctor Houx
