I've temporarily moved down to Brighton as the better half wants her baby with the family around her so we've moved from 'oop North' until early next year when we sell my home and move down here on a permanent basis.

Things i've noticed about Brighton:

Everyone is in a hurry and looks fed up.

Your average joe has a clapped out old car.

No one says hello (although this is probably due to the size of Brighton)

Everything is expensive i.e. 8-9 quid for a haircut is simply ridiculous along with the beer prices, 4.20 for a pint? Your having a laugh, Nay lad 1.22 for a pint of mild in me local back home lol.

House prices are astronomical and i will have to compromise big time when i move down here, I honestly dont know how people afford to live in Brighton, I can only assume that the wages must me much much higher.

I do love the place though, Lovely seafront and the downs is great but i will admit it moving here has hit me like a hammer at how different it is to back home.

So please answer me - How the hell do you afford anything down here?

The exception is Cheetahs gym which is a friggin' bargain and possibly one of the best gyms i've been too.

£9 sounds quite reasonable for a haircut to me.. But then I live in Brighton and have never left the south!

House prices to seem to be pretty high though, I'm paying the same amount in rent as some friends do in London.
I am a student though, and I find Brighton to be fantastic!

£4.20 for a pint though?! Usually about £3 in most pubs!

Have to agree, £9 is a reasonable price for a haircut - As far as affording things down here, well I have to say (living in Worthing) the Parking is ridiculous (20p for 12 mins).

Car are definitely more expensive down here, whenever I look in the PH classifieds tidy low mileage machines are dirt cheap up North...almost given away in Scotland.

Down here they are a rip.

I have family who live in Brighton.
Property prices are pretty high due to the good transport links to London. I think if you go further inland the prices do drop.
People can be quite friendly, one bloke even gave me a 10p when I found out I didn't have enough change for the ticket machine at one of the car parks.
Talking of parking, it's expensive, 10 years ago or 1 hour would cost you £1, dread to think what it is now!

Don't go out alone after dark, there're allsorts hanging about, muggers, rapists, hoodies beating up peeps who look gay etc...

Your average joe has a clapped out old car. (brighton is rather 'to the left' lot of green types around too. so a car around brighton is 'just transport' or a thing to hate)

No one says hello (its a city thing)

Everything is expensive i.e. 8-9 quid for a haircut (thats the norm down south!) beer prices (shop around, some 'trendy bars' and restaurants will try it on with drink prices)

House prices are astronomical. (a lot of people work in london on the 'big wage incomes' and live in brighton...this has pushed house prices up high all along the south coast!!)

Brighton has not been tagged 'london on sea' for nothing !
To be fair, you will find the rest of east and west sussex has a lot more relaxed life style wink

I thought that haircuts would be quite cheap in Brighton as the town is stuffed with hairdressers, or is it just their cars that I see when out and about that way on my bike ?

I had my hair cut yesterday in Leeds and that was £18 and you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere within the city that would be much cheaper. I think anything less than a tenner is a bargain, regardless of location. I spent the first 28 years of my life in the South and since moving to t'grim North I haven't noticed the cost of living being any cheaper, aside from takeaways and taxis.

I've lived in Brighton for 25 years. I would not by choice live anywhere else as a first home. Yes it is expensive to go out, but the place, pretty much all year around is buzzing. It's not friendly in the norf sense of people smiling and chatty, but neither is it unfriendly the way London is. Having two large universities and one of the biggest concentrations of language schools makes for a younger and more vibrant feel to the place. Also, because of the sheer diversity of peoples and cultures, there is far less by way of stoping and staring and people are rather more accepting of diversity. I think in that respect, Brighton does stand apart from a great many other UK places.

The seafront in the summer near the piers can be heaving, but towards the Hoveaktually lawns, it takes on a completely different feeling. I have lived in the centre in Hanover and over in Hove as well and now live on the outskirts in a nice enough part of the city.

(As for 9 quid haircuts, I pay £40, but I have rather a lot of hair and I do like it looking pleasant and not like it's been strimmed from a bloke with the cutting skill of a pissed off Danny Trejo)
