Taking morals a bit far
Discussion
So here is the story! As you may be aware I have sold the Mundano and am looking for its replacement. I found what appeared to be the car to tick all the right boxes at a good price, mileage etc. So I emailed the seller lastnight and asked a few questions as the ad was fairly lame. I then spoke to him this afternoon and he confirmed the car was still for sale however he has been offered a price by a trader which he had provisionally accepted, and was due to get his new car in 3 weeks. I explained I was serious and would drive the 2.5hours tomorrow to see it. He said he would email the trader and explain he had a potential buyer and see what he said??
I have now received an email to say that he is going to let the trader have it as he had offered him a price and he was a man of his word. Bearing in mind I doubt the trader would be offering him what he had it advertised for. He then offered to pass my details to the trader so I could buy it off him. He said the trader is not a mate, but he feels obliged to let him have it!!??? Somehow I dont fancy paying over the odds for it from a trader who has had it for a day!
Am I missing something here? If I was having trouble selling my car and a trader offered me a price, which then I managed to beat privately I would take the private money all day long? The trader is only going to make the profit your losing?
Anyway, rant over. The search continues. . . . . . . .!!!!
He sounds like a bit of a mook to be honest!! Why would you turn down a buyer for your car ( you have to be pretty serious to drive 2.5hours to view a car) to be offered a price by a dealer which will inevitably be less than your offering? He clearly has too much money to waste. Hope you find the right car soon!!
Haha, thanks for the offer. It was an Alpina D3 so not loads of decent ones to pick from.
I understand if he had offered it to a mate or even another private buyer, but the trader is only going to take it off him and sell it for a couple of grand more. Not sure why the chap is being so loyal to someone that he doesnt really owe anything to? I guess it is just easy for him? Just seems a shame to let it go to a trader when he could have easily got more for it if he sold it to me!!! I take your point though that he may have been messed about in the past. From speaking to him I think it is more that he is a genuinely nice bloke. Im just annoyed!!

Then the answer is, no sorry it's sold. If he was being fair.
Great choice of replacement Jim
Yeah thats I what I thought. Rather than emailing me loads more photos and further description. Oh well, I will find another. Just being car less means and house bound I am on the classifieds 24/7!! I think I am going insane.Great choice of replacement Jim
Jim if you need a cheapy but nippy `inbetweener` http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3503143.htm CheeRS Al

If his car is worth 1k but the dealer selling his new car has drawn the paperwork to offer him 2k for it (effectively discounting the new car by a grand), you may find that taking in the old car is a condition of the sale. In which case to then withdraw it means re-negotiating the whole contract. Particularly if the dealer has low-balled him and knows he will make back 500 of his extra grand when he trades it out meaning he really only discounted it by 500).
So no, you cant blame him at all. You were just a bit too late to that particular car. No refelection on the owner in my opinion.
