Southampton - What The Hell Is The World Coming To?
Discussion
My 75 year old Mum was a victim of an unprovoked assault in Southampton city centre this lunchtime, she was crossing the road in the main street towards the Marlands entrance when some guy just pushed her over in the road for absolutely no reason!!
Finally someone came and helped her up amongst the many people who saw it happen and did nothing, and when my Mum asked her ( and two other women) to call the police because she was too shaky to call them they didn't want to know and didn't stay around as witnesses, when my Mum gathered herself together she called me and I then called the police before darting in to the city centre to pick her up.
Luckily nothing was broken and apart from a couple of bruises and my Mum is a fairly tough lady, so apart from being pretty shaken up by the fact that it was completely random and unprovoked she's not too bad.
Thankfully the police turned up really quickly and the two WPC's and one PC did a brilliant and very caring job of calming her down, they are checking the city CCTV to see if it was captured.
What the feck is the world coming too when people do that to our elderly generation and more shockingly the amount of people who simply don't want to know when it comes to helping and acting as a witness?

Sorry to hear about this, hope she is ok.
Southampton is becoming a bit crazy, a machete attack in Lordshill, body found in a burntout car in Chilworth and a burnt body in a bin all in the last week!!! What is the world coming too??
I have never understood people who just walk away from an incident, how would they feel if noone gave them the time of day in a similar situation?

Had similar situations in London.
If people don't stand up to these low lifers then they carry on getting away with ruining lives for everyone and just keep stooping lower and lower. If you see something like this happening then don't turn away. All it takes is a few words. I've gone to court before and these scum are amazed to see witnesses turn up. They soon turn around and fess up when they know they have been cornered.
Stand your ground and don't let decency die.

That's pretty messed up to happen in broad daylight and for nobody to do anything about it. She wasn;t wearing a Pompey shirt was she?!
that would have been a valid reason
The guy that did it was in his 60's my Mum reckons, she had a call from one of the WPC'S this afternoon to make sure she was OK and to assure her they will do everything they can to catch him, they are fairly confident they will.
Thanks for the goodwill and sympathy, I'll pass it on.

Sorry to hear.
I have always been a bit mystified by this. Southampton has always seemed threatening to me and somehow Portsmouth doesn't. I don't think it's familiarity - I have lived & worked in both cities for the last 25 years. The cities are in many ways similar, with good and bad areas, deprivation etc
But in Southampton, I have had my car vandalised to the tune of £1200, I have been threatened, shouted at, spat at etc
Portsmouth? nope, no trouble at all.

Sorry to hear about your mother Stefan. Hope she's doing ok.
I couldn't believe all the police support needed for a Soton vs. Portsmouth football match! Police escorted coaches to get fans into the city! What a waste of resources. If they can't behave themselves, then they shouldn't be allowed to watch the game. Not as easy as that though....
