Hugely depends on the car. My Leon Cupra (1.8T 180HP) runs a lot better on VPower and I get around 20-30 miles extra from a tank I reckon so to me it's worth it. Had a discussion with the lady at the checkout at the Shell garage. She has two MGF's, a standard one and a Trophy. She said the normal car didn;t feel any different but the Trophy loved the VPower as it ran way better and felt a wee bit quicker.
If it's something 'fruity' then VPower/some other high octane stuff. If it's a 1.2 litre shopping trolley then stick to the normal stuff.

Inside the fuel filler flap will probably say 95 or even 98, or something like 98(95).
VAG revised the fuel requirements a few times, but my '06 2.0T prefers 98 RON. FWIW, it doesn't feel any more powerful using expensive fuels, but it does idle smoother and is about 2-3mpg better off on V-Power.

Run my Focus RS mk2 on 99ron Momentum or V power.
Was a bit unsure about Billy's comment of Ford saying must run on 97, as the Focus RS manual states a minimum of 95 Ron. I did get 102 Ron in Germany. Ran 4 tanks on it. My god the car smoother, more responsive to the throttle.
I tend to find supermarket fuel just crap. Really makes the car idle higher.

I run the Disco on BP Ultimate Diesel, partially because it likes it.
Mainly though, due to it taking 82+ litres to fill, i use the 5p off a litre offers at my local station.
I buy 2 bottles of juice and this gets the 5p off, but with 82+ litres, it works out i get the 2 bottles for free and also a bit off the fuel tank as well. So it effectively takes the Ultimate price down to council diesel.
If Shell did the same i would fill it there.
