This isn't going to help in my opinion,

It will reduce trucks to 40mph and create more crazy overtaking manoeuvres from cars/vans

This is my experience from driving HGVs on the A9 between Inverness-Perth, hence why I sit at 50, it seems to reduce these mentalists

Might control the speeding but will not stop the crazy overtakes, or foreign tourists driving on the wrong side.

I've never felt average speed cameras safer. Half the time is spent watching the speedo, the other half doing mental arithmetic.

"Dammit, I've been at 55 for 3 minutes, I can drop to 40 for a minute and a half. fk, there's the camera! I need to go through at... erm... take away 15, divide by 60, carry the two... Four! I need to do four miles per hour for the next 17 seconds."

They may fit a few for effect but I seriously doubt that they would go to the effort of connecting them up. The road needs upgrading to dual carriageway now, not in 10 years time.

I reckon it would be far better to increase the speed limit for HGVs to 56mph. 40mph is just ridiculous and is probably the major contributor to driver frustration and then the overtaking risks concerned.

Also, more reminders on the non-dual carriageway sections that the road is NOT a dual carriageway - this is where foreigners tend to forget and start driving on the right hand side again.

In my opinion, average speed cameras just cause frustration - especially if you don't have cruise control!

IME most of the HGVs are doing over 50 anyway - apart from those that belong to supermarkets and chains which do 40 (though to be fair a quikte a few do pull over).

Speed cameras won't solve the basic problem which is that the road doesn't justidfy dualling and there is a significant number of numpties who don't know how to overtake and bunch tightly behind the HGVs. And then there are the HGVs and caravans that block the outer lanes of the dualled sections.

If the road is dualled it will be hell while it's done. It will be empty most of the time. And it's going to be yet more road surface area to maintain and repair. The Crubenmore dualling extension took ages and didn't seem to deliver much benefir vs the disruption.

Given that the politicins seem to be prepared to cough rather too much money to dual this peripheral road some sort of innovation might be in order. Allow the HGVs to go to 60, try and get traffic to increase spacing in queues, have cameras to monitor for numpties with a team to pull them over for a chat and possibly some paperwork, be allowed to summon HGVs or other slow traffic into parking areas to allow taffic to pass, stop HGVS and caravans from using the outer lane of the dualled sections when traffic is busy, and put some speed enforcement on the dualled sections.

If you go to my A9 thread, I proposed that the road be dueled [apart from bridges obviously] with appropriate junctioning/roundabouts. hgv limit raised to the nsl for a dual as well.

Oh, and average speed cameras @75.

I guess it's a case of speed kills AGAIN.
