Police resourcing aside, that link is pretty much a total non-story. Just simple headline grabbing IMHO.
The figures they're bandying about aren't official and are 'extrapolated from coroner's reports' - unless they've used extrapolated in the wrong context, then they're admitting that this is just an educated guess based on the ones they've looked at, no? Funny how they go on to admit that last year's educated guess was 50 cases high (25% error?). Looks like they're either estimating high to try and suit an agenda, or they heavily manipulated last year's figures to show a drop and now it's bitten them on the arse.
Why report provisional numbers? Why not wait till the data is correct? It's not as if year on year is statistically meaningful anyway. The records over the last few decades quoted in that report speak from themselves. Reducing deaths from drunk driving has been a pretty big success as far as I can see?

Hahaha I was only kidding too. Would have posted a picture of the map to there but work computers would not let me.
A friend of mine in the last month has had a bottle thrown through a van window when he was driving on the M80 @ 70, his girlfriends phone stolen and something else (I forget) and not once have they done a thing about it. he chased the bottle incident a week later to be told no body was even looking at it......
Yet he had to remove his seatbelt at some lights (stationary) to retrieve something from a back seat and they fined him £60, he was not driving the Van at the time I must add and the light was not changing from red, I get the laws but come on!!!
Motorist are becoming the only criminals in the eyes of these people now. Soft targets because yobs n thugs don't walk about with registrations plates that can be tracked to homes and business'.

With the trend for automatic enforcement and less and less real visible police on the roads the deterrent to drink drivers simply isn't there, so no real surprise the figures are rising, not rocket science. They do summer and festive campaigns and catch heaps of people and they are always "disappointed" but the rest of the year these same people are still doing it. I had a multi agency meeting where this was discussed and the police were baffled and it was suggested that if they are catching more people with less patrol cars what were the real figures - scary! Taxi fares locally at xmas were also brought up as people travel up to 20 - 30miles to our town for a night out usually by car planning to get a taxi home, but when they come out the pubs at 0300 there are next to no cops on the roads and the taxis are charging up to £100 for a 20 mile journey so they chance it?
