I attempted to buy a thing - an unexciting and low value thing.

£4.49 + £3.25 P&P.

The seller is in West Yorkshire. It's a company, not an individual. Their feedback score is 3456 (99.4% positive).

A couple of days later, I get a message ...

Hi, unfortunately there is an additional £5.00 postage for Aberdeen.can we send you a paypal invoice for that please? or if it's not worth your while we can cancel the order for you.
... so ...

Eric said:
How’s that?

Your eBay listing stated the postage (£3.25) is to “United Kingdom”.

Aberdeen is on the UK mainland … but you now want an additional £5

Is this a scam?

Do you want to reconsider?
... and ...

Toe Rags said:
hi, all our delivery companies charge extra for aberdeen and a few other postcodes mentioned in the listing.they are not our charges- for larger items where these charges are very excessive we don't allow checkout for these postcodes but customers' are often happy to pay extra for smaller items so we allow checkout but mention the charges in listing.it is your choice we can refund you if you want but can't deliver to aberdeen for £3.25 unfortunately.
... check the listing again and ...

... last word ...

I now see the conditions on your listing – but really, this is balderdash.

It’s the first time I have ever been asked to pay additional carriage and I’m astonished.

Aberdeen is Scotland’s third biggest city with a population of some 220,000.

We are have road and rail links and we are served by an international airport.

I’m intrigued as to which companies you use for delivery.

If you maybe try the Post Office in future, your sales north of the border will improve.

Please just provide a refund and cancel the order.
Madness! mad

Anyone else had anything similar?

Cheers,

Been there.
£200 order, the advert said free delivery to mainland england.
Emailed to query for delivery to Edinburgh, £50 extra.
From Cheshire (wherever that is). So from Berwick to Edinburgh is £50 i asked them? They didnt respond and i didnt buy. To be fair they did say mainland england.

Sadly seen this loads of times Kiltie. The worst ones are when Aberdeen is classified as 'Highlands and Islands'.

I had an argument with a London based breakers yard twenty years ago because he was adamant that you had to get a ferry to Aberdeen and therefore it was on the Islands. God knows where he learnt his geography. rolleyes

Have just bought something on eBay too. A carbon bonnet. Guy says that postage is £45 to Mainland UK. I was like cool go for that!

Comes back with "I will need £50 more to post to Ellon (10 miles north of Aberdeen if there are any courier folk on here!)"

I have had this many a time before, trying to say we are in the highlands in Aberdeenshire... No bother!!

surely it's something that can be put in a jiffy bag and sent 1st class standard for £2.65+VAT through the Royal Mail online business account (assuming they're a decent sized company)? I really don't get why so many eBay sellers use courier only on cheaper items when the Royal Mail is so reasonably priced and can offer bolt-ons such as guaranteed next-day delivery, tracking, etc. should they need it

We only send through Royal Mail in my business (biggest items tend to be brake discs or track control arms) and haven't actually needed a courier yet and that's with tens of thousands of sales a year.

From the point of view of a buyer in Aberdeen, wanting extra would really piss me off if it is a postable item, maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick and it's a chest of drawers.

Rant over...

I live in West Dunbartonshire, G83
It's about 18 miles due west of Glasgow, north side of the Clyde. There's a certain database of postcodes some companies use, that classify G83 as Highlands & Islands, thus incurring a delivery premium. FFS

The kicker is Rosneath, G84 which is around the Peninsular from Helensburgh and Garelochhead doesn't incur a premium!

Sometimes it's possible to use a different supplier and get mainland rates for G83.

Similar occurrence for me at Christmas. Was having beer delivered to my parents in Fort William. Now I'll give them that Fort William is in the the highlands. Delivery charge from England was more than double the delivery to Glasgow.

Decided just to make space in my boot and take it myself...

It is extremely frustrating when it happens.

To offshorematt2, I thought that a ferry was required to get to Aberdeen, if you're traveling from Shetland...

I've had this a few times in the past, as living in Kintore we have an AB51 postcode which some companies classify as Highlands and Islands. I tried arguing with a company once that it wasn't in the H&I, and was only 8 miles from an International Airport but to no avail as that what their computer was telling them! Got them to deliver to my work instead. I now try to avoid any company that imposes extra charges based on postcodes.

A similar scenario occurs with Isle of Wight post codes. Whoever drew up a particular post code database also included Portsmouth and the surrounding codes. Although Portsmouth is an island too there are no carriage restrictions with a bloody motorway connecting it to the 'mainland'

Some people just blindly follow 'computer says nooooo.

It's a mixed response up here in Orkney - definitely Highlands and Islands! I fully understand that if a company you are dealing with is sending something which HAS to come by courier (aerosols, hazardous stuff or just too big for Parcelforce) then they can't be expected to pay the difference. BUT your ad clearly stated UK Mainland - I would spit out my dummy and contact OFT and your MP. They sometimes say to me that they have a contract with 'X' courier company and cannot use Parcelforce - who, by the way treat the Highlands and Islands the same as UK - so that constitutes restrictive practice in my book.
Parcelforce have been fantastic for us, it's just a pity that these money-grabbing Conservatives want to sell what is not theirs, to their fat cat cronies - another nail in the coffin for the Highlands and Islands. Smacks of 'Island Clearances'
OOPS, must go now, I'm only allowed 3 rants each day before Nurse comes round with the medication! And I couldn't find my new socks this morning - so that's only one rant left!

I'm coming up on Wednesday afternoon. PM me if you want my address and I'll bring it up for you. I know it's the principal of the thing, but if you need the item?

A very kind and lovely offer - I'm most grateful.

It's something I can get locally though - I just wanted to avoid the pain of going to a B&Q type place.

Thanks for the thought. smile

Cant blame the sellers, it's the courier company, many stick with one that suits 'most' of their needs, just happens that some see AB postcodes on the whole as off the beaten track.

Most companies would mention this as they do in their listing.

Some folk just shouldnt be in business.
When I ran my own small web based retail site, I would send items to Shetland at the same rate as the Uk mainland - because to me service to the customer was more important than squeezing extra profit from unfair delivery charges.

mabe I was wrong though - as I dont run the site any more and have to work elsewhere.
Extra annoying as I cant get weekends off and havent been to a track in months - and should have been at Knockhill today. (mini rant over).

It's happened to me many times too. I wonder how much trade these companies lose from folk not buying from them. This is one reason I like Amazon, next day delivery for £50 a year.

You can most certainly blame the sellers if they advertise "£X to UK mainland" then they change their mind.

Wasn't a Lawmower Batter by any chance was it Eric ??

Dear Mr , thank you for your order, unfortuatley your postal code area would fall outside the UK Mainland. We are charge a national charge of £7.50 for areas outside the Mainland. We would not be able to process your order until the extra £7.50 has been paid, please let us know if you would like to cancel the order for a full refund, or if you would like us to send you a paypal invoice for the extra shipping charge. Kind regards Paul

Hi,

I take it that, to paraphrase John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious!?"

I am not sure on which level of Geography my DD11 postcode, ie a Dundee postcode can be considered to be "outside the UK Mainland" I have looked on the map and I do indeed live where I thought I lived and it is pretty much the UK mainland. Infact the BBC (not always reliable but a safe bet in this case) describes us as "Central Scotland" which pretty much sums up exactly where Dundee and its environs are.

That's Dundee, Scotland. The Dundee which is 40 miles north of Edinburgh (Scotland) and 90 miles south of Aberdeen (Scotland). The very same Dundee which is just up the road from Perth which for a decade had as its (admittedly corny) City slogan, "Perth, City of the 90s" because geographically it lies within 90 miles of 90% of the entire Scottish population. If you drive 90 mins south from Dundee you are in England, which I am confident you would describe as being "UK mainland" and I know that I have never had to cross water to make that journey.

Help me out here and just confirm that this was some sort of "Computer says No" type of mistake and that you can indeed sent the battery... needed to resurrect my John Deere mower... to me here in Central Scotland, for the price & postage advertised.

The grass is growing.....

Cheers,

Jim

When did they move Dundee?

I must have missed that.
