Was I dreaming, or did I see a gritter in operation around Inverurie/Aberdeenshire?

If anyone's in the know, may I ask why?

I was driving on a gritted section of Anderson Drive last week - about 11 degrees at the time. I couldn't believe my eyes. Then while walking home from Aberdeen city centre I heard the horrible noise of grit being fired at parked cars as a gritter made its way along Albyn place. Upon arriving home I checked the forecasts and there was no sign of any bad weather ahead. So what was that all about? Council have too much money and trying to waste it, make a mess of the roads and help corrode our cars?

Test runs? I've seen snowploughs out on the motorways around the central belt over the last few weeks. I read somewhere that there's a new variant of rock salt being used this year, so maybe it's being spread then the effectiveness of spreading tested.
