Having put my kit car up for sale I’ve started looking around for the next project to take up space in my garage and absorb money..

I was thinking about a Mk 1 or 2 Escort. That was until I started looking at the prices these things are going for now yikes

Is it just me or are their values somewhat overinflated? I can understand that a RS1800 or a perhaps even a good RS2000/Mexico/Twincam etc might fetch a few pounds.

But what is the big deal with all the rest? A look on Ebay shows bidding frenzies for a collection of rusty metal and a box of bits that was once a 1.3l or suchlike.

I guess demand from the rally sector might push up prices for good shells and there can’t be many left now.

I had a fair few Mk1s and 2s in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Fun at the time but most of them had corrosion issues way back then! Not to mention water leaks, mouldy carpets yuck etc etc.

I guess cars are worth what folk are willing to pay and the old RWD Escort has a rally heritage and nostalgia around it – hence me thinking about getting one. But aside from a few gems like the RS1800 or Lotus, the day to day models were a pretty mediocre car.

I wonder if folk will go so mad for base model Focuses in the future scratchchin.

I'm in process restoring a friends mk2 rs2000 and cost for just panels are close to 3k and more is needed I recon be close to 5-7k when completed if not more to finish but value of car would be 15k mark

Mk1 and mk2 are going silly prices and putting parts prices up through roof eg 1x inner wing £800 + vat

Doing a bit of shopping around getting bit cheaper for parts.

I'll consider look at Capri or cortina parts are easy sourced and affordable

O/T but saw a lovely white MK 2 up in Pitlochry this afternoon. Made a great noise too.

For similar era RWD & VFM I'd go a Manta saloon with a 400 kit running a red top etc

What were they when sold new?!

I sold my Mk1 back in 1990 for £850. It was a reshelled RS2000.

It's all too easy for an 1100 popular to become a flat front RS2000 with the associated hike in value. I used to regularly buy tweaked RS' out he back of Motoring News for about £700! I'd need at least 10 times that today!

Another alternative to the Escort, is another 2 door, sub ton, RWD car that is better built and has independent rear suspension. They can still be found for under £1k though and built into something quick and fun, for a whole lot less than the Escort.

I have a TR7v8, it's not an escort so it's a fraction of the money and just as much fun

I've always fancied one of those myself. There one in the classifieds that caught my eye the other day.

I have never understood the thinking behind someone paying this kind of money for what at the time was just a cheap and nasty mass produced car.

You can buy a UR Quattro from the same money!!

I think it's the fact that they do what they do, so well. Even 30+ years on, they can be built into a terrific rally/race car with the performance to match way more recent machinery. A well driven MK2 can beat WRC Focus and the like! Add the fact, that middle aged men with disposable income, and the desire to own cars they saw race and rally when they were growing up, and there are only so many cars to go round. I think they're great cars but there are lots of equally great alternatives, like Manta, 323i, HSR Chevette etc.

This is a badass Escort though.

I know. They're better made! smile I think they make a good alternative though and can certainly be as much fun to drive, given they're roughly about the same size, weight and power. (dependent on model) I think the same could be said of a few models of the era.

There's just something about Fast Fords, but, could I justify selling my 911 to buy a Mk1 Lotus Cortina?,,,

I guess it might depend what sort of 911 you have and what you're looking for in a car? I've never driven a Lotus Cortina but I imagine they're worlds apart. Both are certainly nice cars though.
