Winter tyres for FN2 Type R?

I'm sure we've all seen the long range weather forecasts for this year promising heavy snow between December and February in Scotland. I live fairly near Glasgow City centre but have friends and relatives in more rural areas. Would it be a sensible idea to fit winter tyres to a fwd hatchback for 3 months or just a waste of money?
My old FN2 did get winter tyres but untreated roads made it a snow plow.
Its a difficult one. I had a set of cheap steel wheels then put the winter tyres on them. Don't put them on your normal alloys.
Just use the 4x4 now during the winter. First drop of snow and the M3 will be in the garage for the rest of the winter.

I have done the lat 8 or so winters in mostly an FN2, but an EP3 as well. (Throwing in a Corolla Tsport Compressor for one year) without winter tyres.
I have had no issues, just drive to the conditions...
This entailed local miles in South Ayrshire, but also shedloads of travel down South. (app 20K per year)

Added benefits on the FN2 are a slightly better ride and mpg, though its not a good look I'll admit!
I went through 2 winters in Aberdeenshire with my FN2 without winter tyres.
It's possible, but in snow you would have to drive very carefully as the limits were very low. One area of concern is if the the TC triggers, this will brake the spinning wheel (simulating an LSD I guess) - while this gives a small traction advantage in snow, if this happens while driving along a road with camber it can spin up both front wheels and the nose will drift towards the edge of the road

Winter tyres make a huge difference. I have spare alloys with winter tyres that i fit to my cars every year. I try to keep the rs off the salty roads, but just fitted my winters to my Leon cupra today and will do the same with my wife's Audi A4 later this week.
Why go to all the expense? It keeps your good alloys from getting potential scrapes or worse in potholes. Salt can't be good for them either. Your tyres will last almost twice as long, as during the winter months your summer tyres are sitting in your garage. Most of all they work really well in the snow or on cold wet roads.
I think it's worth it, although some will have their own opinions.

Get them, they are wonderful. I have fitted 16 alloys instead of 18" with Michelin pilot sports which have been spinning up when driven enthusiastically for the last 3-4weeks. I have noticed a massive difference in grip, drive from corners and feel....

I got them for my ML, they are very good and would recommend them. Great grip and you hardly know they are on the car as there is no difference to driving.

I'm a big fan of winter tyres. The traction difference has to be experienced to be believed. And as has been mentioned, it's a temperature thing, not a stuff-on-the-road thing. i.e. even on a cold dry day, winter tyres will outperform summer tyres.
I run Marangonis on my Espace. They're an offshoot of Michelin, so although it might not be a familiar name, there's heritage behind them. If we decide to stay in the UK, I'm going to get a set for the Jaguar too, but I'm not going to shell out without knowing our future.
