Learning to use a chainsaw
Discussion
Basic kit here Andrew http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chainsaw-Safety-Protecti...
Leathers offer no protection against a chainsaw. Chainsaw trousers are filled with strands of material that jam the blade instantly if they come in contact with the chain.
Not to dissuade you from a training course, I'm sure there'd be a lot of benefit from doing one but there are many clips on YouTube re chainsaw safety.

Seriously, be careful if you do get a saw. They are brilliant tools, once you know how to safely use one.
Top few things... Buy the right protective clothing, never look down in line with the bar, don't touch the top 1/4 tip of the bar against anything (kickback is a b
h!), run the saw at full rpm before you start cutting, use the dogs (log spikes) when felling, keep your chain sharp and well adjusted, make sure you understand directional pressures/ binds, and don't saw anything with dirt on it (as you will need a new chain within seconds).
If you don't do a course, I'd definitely make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing to show you the basics rather than just having a guess.

Might be worth having a look on Centurion at hard hats with visors and ( if it's a petrol Chain saw) ,ear defenders. The visor is particularly good if you wear glasses .The ones on the bay will be cheaper, but who makes them ?
Too many reports on TV these days about fakes, and last thing I'd want is a iffy hat/googles etc .

This looks a decent started kit http://chainsawspecialists.co.uk/acatalog/Woodburn... Although I'm sure you can get cheaper, I'm not sure cheapest is something I really want in a chainsaw!
i use a Bosch 40 model ,electric. For waht I need it's great. Just be carefull near dirt/nails etc as two seconds on a nail can mean a resharpen or new. It certainly knocked the guts out of next doors over the fence jungle branches. I'd no problem learning to handle it, but I've had courses in all sorts of hand operated cutting plant. And don't forger chain oil.
