I am planning a motoring jolly for next year, my oldest lad is car daft as well so both of us fancy Goodwood FOS. Does anyone from up North make the pilgrimage as well? Tickets arent cheap granted. I am quite happy to camp or hotel stay to be honest. Any words of wisdom for those that travel the nearly 600 miles south!
I fancy doing the whole four days, if we are going might as well make the most of it kind of deal.
Any of you fellow Scottish contingent made the journey? Regulars? Words of wisdom?

Been 3 or 4 times now since first visit in 1997, you'll have a ball.

Went down in 2012 and have tickets for 2014. There isn't much you can do wrong with the place, its a great event and on a scale you'll never see north of the border.
We found it was hugely popular with everyone from obvious motoring anoraks to the London city set. There are people with large cameras getting very excited about 6R4s running through the mini forest stage, then there are the blazer and slacks guys relaxing on the Verve Clicquot sofas!
After some research we opted to skip the Moving Motor Show on the Thursday and used that day away from loved ones and responsibilities at home to travel down. The plan for June coming is to do the same I believe as the show proper doesn't fire up until the Friday.
Expect it to be very busy and consider a roving grandstand pass for at least one of the days you'll be there so you can see the hill climbing at some point. It gets to two or three deep along the climb until the F1 cars come out for their showboating, at which point its nearly six deep.
Wear comfortable shoes as you will cover a huge distance and if you are motoring in to the event expect long queues morning and afternoon.
If you have an Audi, take the keys with you, their "stand" has a small viewing gallery open to Audi customers only, proven by showing your car key to a member of staff. I say "stand" as its a mobile showroom that comes over from Germany and takes 2-3 weeks to build. Most of the manufacturers have something equally as large and impressive and there is lots to see away from the hill climb.
We camped last time and have opted to do so again. Its not cheap but neither is most of the accommodation in the area the moment the dates are announced. In 2012 I saw a travel lodge some 30 odd miles away from Goodwood asking £199 per night for a double room for the Wednesday to Sunday nights and a fraction of that for the dates either side.
I'd read, prior to our previous visit, that food and drink from the various outlets was pricey even for what is effectively a prestige motorsport event. In truth it wasn't cheap but not ridiculous either, we were still seeing change out of a tenner for something like a jacket potato, a soft drink and something sweet to keep the energy levels up.
To spend the full three or four days there would give you time to work your way round all there is to see without rushing much or missing anything out. It could be done in two without hanging about too long in any one area or skipping the retail village or the showrooms etc. Day trippers are only going to see some of whats on offer.
I could prattle on all day but have some pics of last years instead...

I went (from Perthshire) this year for the first time in years: I used to live near Goodwood so went regularly but generally find the Revival meeting more interesting than the FoS. I went to the FoS this year for the 911 50th and was stunned by how much the event had grown since I was last there - I was just there for the day, but could easily have done two or more - there was so much to see. Local's tip: get there by heading down the A3 to Petersfield, then the B2146/B2141 - misses the huge queues that build up through Midhurst and from Singleton. Damn, now everyone's going to do it… This year I went at 8am on the Saturday, had clear roads all the way down and had a great hoon.

Is the campsite tough to get a car in and out of? ie is it worth taking the good car of the utilitarian wagen? Actually i am trying to buy a car the same as your dad (ALY77) was hoping to take it, but not wanting to rip it to bits in a muddy field.

If you are in the camping areas supplied by Goodwood then leave the car on site and walk it.
There are free tractor/trailer shuttles from the back of the car park which is a small field away from the non electric camp site. The power hook up sites are closer.
In the pic below the red area is the non electric camping, the yellow is the electric hook up camping (£60 more for electric pitch) and the blueish lines is the tractor run. That field is one of the public parking fields. The white lines are loosely how I recall the perimeter of the show with the entrance areas. Certainly there is some walking over a golf course on the way in!

My dad has a Mazda 3 and a 1.1 Saxo he's had since 1997?
The ground was cutting up a little right at the entrance to the camp site when we went in on the Thursday night but it wasn't bad.
I'd take whatever car you can do a big journey in comfort in. We took a diesel Phaeton down last time and it was still a tiring journey each way, particularly coming home, we left the show on the Sunday at the back of five, packed up the tents and drove straight home.
Between the traffic leaving the area, hold ups around Birmingham and coming home via mates house in Falkirk (I'm in Edinburgh), think I got home about half five on the Monday morning.

I am 30 miles past Aberdeen, its a bloody long drive. Might as well make it eventful on the return leg and stagger over two days.
